Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR July 21 - Southeast DC

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week is 13 miles along the Southeast DC loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to shorten the run while still starting off along the same route as the group, one way to do this is to hop onto the Metro back to Rosslyn. You can choose between a couple stops along the way - Potomac Ave is at about 8 miles, or Smithsonian is at about 10.5 miles. Both Coach Jonny and I are out of town this week, but you're in good hands this week with Coach Big Guy who will be there to kick off the run!

Thank you Bobby Beasley for post-run drinks this week, and Shawn & Katherine Zeller for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located on Anacostia Dr. near the rec center, at about 7 miles into the run.

We are in need of more volunteers in September and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks for a number of weeks throughout the saeason, so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR July 14 - Pentagon Army Navy

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week we have a 12 mile run scheduled on the Pentagon Army Navy route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like additional distance you can take a right after reaching the Mt Vernon Trail and head toward Old Town for as long as you like. Alternately, you can add on laps of Roosevelt Island on your way back for just over 1 mile per lap. If you return directly to Iwo Jima from memorial bridge on your way back rather than continuing up to Rosslyn, it will cut about 1 mile off of the route. I can't make it to the run this week unfortunately, but Coach Jonny will be there kick things off!

Thank you Bobby Beasley for post-run drinks this week! Unfortunately we will not have mid-run drinks provided along the route this week due to lack of a volunteer.

We are in need of more volunteers in August and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks including this week (tomorrow), so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR July 7 - Capital Crescent

Hello Saturday Runners!

Your route this week is out and back on the Capital Crescent Trail (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for a recommended distance of 14 miles. You can easily modify this route to be any distance you like, but just turning around at your own desired halfway point for the run. If you're going for 14 miles, the turnaround point at 7 miles will be just after the overpass at River Rd. I'm again out of town this weekend, but Coach Jonny will be there to get the run started for both SLR and MTP!

Thank you James Sledge for post-run drinks and Miguel Matta for mid-run drinks! Miguel will be located along the Capital Crescent Trail, roughly 6 miles from the starting point.

We are in need of more volunteers in August and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks including next week, so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike
