Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR March 30 - Glover Archbold Pandas

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run, on Saturday March 30, is Glover Archbold Pandas (directions: cue sheet and GPS) for 13 miles. If you'd like to go for less than 13 miles, an out & back run to the top of the Glover - Archbold trail at Van Ness is about 10 miles. Also, assuming that construction at the Glover - Archbold trail entrance is still ongoing, instead of the usual entry continue up Foxhall Rd NW, take a right on 44th St NW, and a right on P St NW which will end at an entry trail into Glover - Archbold Park. This Saturday should have some nice running weather, with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s! I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Franco will get things going for you at 8:00 on Saturday morning.

Thank you Ryan Moore for post-run drinks this week! We currently need a volunteer starting next week to cover April 6 and April 13, so please let me know ASAP if you can help with these dates. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR March 23 - Custis to W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week on Saturday morning, March 23, we'll be running out & back on the Custis and W&OD Trails (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). For those of you running Boston in 3 weeks this is scheduled as a 20 miler, but you can easily adjust the route for whatever distance you'd like. Since it's out & back, just turn around at any point whenever you reach half the distance you want to run this week. Note that there will be a detour at the Custis to W&OD intersection, but by following signs you should soon be back on the W&OD trail without much distance added.

Thank you Ryan Moore for post-run drinks this week! We will need more volunteers in April and beyond, so please let me know when you can help out. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR March 16 - Mt Vernon - Hains Point T

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route on Saturday, March 16 will be the Mt Vernon - Hains Point T (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), for 15 miles. If you'd like to add any distance to the mapped route, you can continue a little further down the Mt Vernon Trail before turning around to end that leg of the T. For a shorter run, you can turn around earlier on the Mt Vernon leg, or if you entirely skip either the Mt Vernon leg or Hains Point leg it will be about 10 miles. We have a great morning to run coming up this Saturday, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-40s, so I hope to see you all out there!

Thank you Aziz Abdullahi for post-run drinks over the last two weeks!

Mike
