SLR - 14 Miles Capital Crescent Trail

Hello Saturday Long Runners!

Our last SLR of the year is finally here and I just want to say thank you so much for letting me lead this awesome crew for these past 7ish months (and to Megan for a fantastic first half of the year!). Take some time this weekend to reflect on everything you’ve accomplished this year both on and off the run, and come out tomorrow morning to polish off those last few miles for the year. The weather tomorrow looks excellent, with overcast skies and temperatures in the upper 30s. Now let’s get into it:

The Route: We’re ending the year on a classic and a special request from Steve Klug: Capital Crescent (strava, gps, pdf). The recommended distance for the week is 14 miles, but this is a bit of a choose your own adventure type route. Take the canal for a bit of change in surface, turn around early or late for some more or less mileage, or take a detour to places like Battery Kemble Park or Georgetown Waterfront. The official turnaround is at the 4.5 MM near River Road, or whenever your GPS watch beeps at 7 miles, whichever comes first ;).

Want Something Shorter? The half mile markers along the trail roughly correspond to mile markers for our run. Turn around at 5.5 MM for 12 miles, 6.5 for 10 miles, and so on!

Need a Longer Route? These paved over train tracks can take you all the way to Bethesda if you let them! As with running shorter, to go longer just run to further mile markers (4 for 15, 3.5 for 16, and so on). Or do something crazy and make it a clockwise Big Loop for some Rock Creek Park action!

Thirsty? Fletcher's Cove at mile 3.5 has a water fountain of questionable reliability, as are most of the ones north on the Capital Crescent Trail. You may get lucky tomorrow, but bring your own water to be on the safe side!

Need a Bathroom? Fletcher's Cove is also your best bet for indoor plumbing. There are a few other areas on the Capital Crescent that have the occasional porto potty, but those are based entirely on luck.

The next club race is the Predictions and Resolutions 5K on New Years Day! Start the year off right with a race! As a reminder, SLR will also be cancelled both next week (January 6th) and the week after (January 13th) for the Al Lewis 10 Miler and JFK 20K. Support the club and earn some Snowball Series points!

Happy Running!

Anna
