Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Aug 11 - Arlington Triangle CCW

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Aug. 11th, we will be running the Arlington Triangle Loop, Counter Clock Wise though, so heading up Custis trail first. The listed route mileage is 16.5 miles. Check this gmap-pedometer map for full details.

Please thank Rich Mendelowitz and Chris Britz for our post-run Beverages, and a big thanks to Jenn Zielinski for mid-run drinks. Fall months are open for post-run beverage volunteers (September is right around the corner) - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Directions: You know the drill - but just do the loop Counter Clock Wise this time! So, go through Rosslyn, head up Custis trail first (knock that hill out while its still cool), then enjoy a gradual downhill the rest of the run! Take W&OD trail to 4 mile run trail until it hits Mt. Vernon trail near DCA. Take Mt. Vernon trail North toward Memorial bridge, and finish at the park NW of Iwo Jima.  Plenty of waterfountains and a few restrooms along the way too.

Mileage Options:

16.5: Take Left on Memorial Bridge (don't run up to Roosevelt Island).

18.25: Continue on Mt. Vernon and do a loop around Roosevelt Island (as detailed in the gmap-pedometer map)

Stay cool, take it easy on the hills, and remember to hit those water fountains before you get thirsty! Happy Running!

SLR Aug 4 - Marymount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Aug. 4th, we will be running the Marymount Chain Bridge Loop Route. The listed route mileage is 14 miles. Check the cue sheet and map for full details.

Please thank Rich Mendelowitz and Chris Britz for our post-run Beverages, and Matthew Chesnes has been nice enough to provide our mid-run drinks.  Fall months are open for post-run beverage volunteers - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

I will be out this Saturday for a race but back next week - Rick DeSaussure will be getting things started for us. We continue to meet at the park at 1300 Arlington Blvd. at 7am all summer.

Directions: Go through Rosslyn and take Custis Trail West, just after crossing bridge over Spout Run Pkwy, turnoff sharp left, go under bridge and turn left on bike trail to Lorcum Lane. Right on Nellie Custis Dr (hill), becomes Military Rd. 400 meters after Marcey Street, by fire hydrant, turn left into Zach Taylor Park. Take trail up hill through park. Trail opens on two roads (Vermont and Vernon), cross and stay on paved trail. Turn left on 26th, running by Marymount College, right on Old Dominion, veer right on Glebe Rd. Take right on N. Old Glebe Rd, staying right of white church, just past Military road follow green bike route signs, turn right on Old Glebe and quick Left on N. Randolph, take steep hill down to Chain Bridge and cross on left side, now take walkway on left to C&O Canal towpath. Return towards Georgetown next to the water (bathroom at Fletcher's boat house). At the end of Georgetown, take right on Rock Creek Trail, taking Memorial Bridge back to Iwo Jima.

Mileage Options:

9: Continue on Military Road to N. Old Glebe Rd. (Don't turn left into Park), cutting off the Marymount college portion, return to Iwo Jima via Key Bridge

12: Do route as written but return to Iwo Jima via Key Bridge

Stay cool, take it easy on the hills, and remember to hit those water fountains before you get thirsty! Happy Running!

SLR July 28 - C&O Canal Towpath

Hello Saturday Runners!

Hope everyone is keeping cool out there!  This Sat, July 28th we will be running an out and back on the C&O Canal Towpath.  I put down 18 miles since folks are probably starting to build up for their fall marathons, but feel free to run less (or more) as needed.  The heat shouldn't be too bad either, but still make sure to stop for water when you have the chance (several water fountains along route). Still starting at the park NW of Iwo Jima.

Thank you again to Eric Waskowicz for providing post-run drinks, and to Stephanie Devlin for mid-run drinks this week. Drinks are taken care of for August, but we will be needing someone to do post-run beverages in September and beyond. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

You might want to wear a hat or sunglasses if its sunny out - you're in the shade a lot but the sun can get in your eyes a bit on the way back.  Also remember that the towpath is packed dirt so your times might be a little slower than normal, but the upside is that running on trails or packed dirt is often easier on your joints and has less risk of injury.

Directions: From Iwo Jima, go through Rosslyn and cross Key Bridge. Take a sharp right after the bridge down to river side of C&O Canal. Turn right (go under Key Bridge) and run for miles!

The mile markers are situated to match up with the distance travelled from Iwo Jima. In other words, mile marker 3 (near Fletcher's Boathouse) is 3 miles out. So...

  • 12 miles to Towpath Mile Marker 6 and back
  • 14 Miles to Mile Marker 7 and back
  • 18 miles to Mile Marker 9 and back
  • 19 miles to Beltway and back

Water stops (and facilities) at Fletcher's Boathouse at Mile Marker 3, water at Towpath Mile Marker 5 and just before Towpath Mile Marker 9. Hit these out AND back.

Thank you to all those who participated (both running and helping out) with the DCRRC track championships Wednesday!

Happy Running!

-- Erik
