Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Oct 13 - Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Oct 13th we will be running the Ross Drive Route, listed at 14 miles.  Check the cue sheet and map for clarification.  We continue to meet 8:00am at the small park NW of Iwo Jima.  I will be out of town again this week but Rich Mendelowitz will be getting things started.

Please thank Christine Westcott our post-run drinks!  As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Mileage Options:

10: (or whatever distance) make it an out and back, turning around when appropriate.  For 10, turn around at Broad Branch Road NW.

13.8: Run route as directed in cue sheet.

17: Do two loops (instead of just one), after you get back to Broad Branch Road (from Ridge Road), go back up Beach Drive, take Ross Drive down again to Ridge Drive.

You've got 2 weeks until Marine Corps Marathon! Have fun!

SLR Oct 6 - Capital Crescent Trail

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Oct. 6th, we will be running an out and back on the Capital Crescent Trail. The posted mileage is 20 miles but feel free to do less (or more) as needed.  I will be out of town this weekend but Rick DeSaucer will be getting things started.

Please thank Christine Westcott for our post-run drinks. We currently don't have anyone doing mid-run drinks, but there are plenty of water fountains along this route to get a drink at and wash that yummy Gu down with! As always, we seek post-run beverage volunteers for the coming months. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Its Marathon Season! You're 3 weeks out from Marine Corps Marathon so this should be your last LSD (Long Slow Disance) training run.  Good luck to our runners doing Chicago on Sunday!  Also be sure to plan accordinly if you are doing any of the other fall biggies:

Marathon Date Weeks Out

Baltimore 10/13 1
MCM 10/28 3
NYC 11/4 4
Richmond 11/10 5

Have FUN!

SLR Sept 29 - Marine Corps Mock Route

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Sep. 29th, we will be running the Marine Corps Marathon Mock route. This route covers roughly the middle 16 miles of the Marathon Course, with other mileage options to follow.  Please review the cue sheet and map for full details. We continue to meet 8:00am at the small park NW of Iwo Jima.

Please thank Walter Barret and Liz Tripodi for our post-run drinks! We currently do not have anyone on deck for mid-run drinks.  This shouldn't be a big deal since its a bit cooler out now and there are plenty of water fountains along this route, so please get a drink if you are feeling hot.  Next week is the final long run before Marine Corps so we still could use a mid-run drink volunteer for that (as well as post-run drink volunteers for the coming months).  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Mileage Options:

11: After passing Lincoln Memorial, while on Ohio Drive, go left on West Basin Drive, before FDR memorial, and rejoin the route on Independence Ave heading west.

13.5: Cut off Hains Pt. by taking left on Buckeye Drive, rejoin route on Ohio Drive.

17: To add on a little over a mile, continue north on Mt. Vernon trail, past Roosevelt Island, and come back through Rosslyn.  You can add on loops around Roosevelt Island for even more at about 1.25 miles per loop.

I know that final hill will feel tough but you won't even notice it when you are finishing the Marathon and have thousands of people cheering you on! Have fun!
