Programs & Races

This weekend is a particularly busy one for the club, with it being the last weekend of training for the club's 16-week Army Ten-Miler Training Program, the Marathon Training Program nearing its completion date after more than four months of training and the National Capital 20 Miler and 5 Miler Race being run on Sunday, September 27.

The 10M program experienced a three-fold increase in participants over last year's program thanks to the club being named the exclusive training partner of the Army Ten-Miler Race this year, an association brought about by Program Director Emily Grossman who did a tremendous job in deftly handling the greatly increased complexity of this summer's Program.  This week will feature a taper run of 8 miles at the 3 locations, the trainees having run 11 miles last week in the Program's longest run.  The Army race is Sunday, October 4th.  Emily has been made the Program Director for the club's upcoming SunTrust National Marathon & Half Marathon Training Program, which will kick off with weekend conditioning runs next month prior to the official start of the Program in November.  Stay tuned!

The MTP did its longest run of 22 miles last week and will step back on Saturday with a run of 14 miles before embarking on a 20-mile run on October 3rd.  The participants are eager to tackle their target marathons, mostly the MCM next month, and thanks go out to Program Directors Alex Barrage and Kristin Dahling, who doubles as the SLR Director, for bringing each trainee so close to the start line in a ready condition, where (gulp) the rest is up to him or her!

Sunday September 27th will see this year's running of the club's National Capital 20-Mile and 5-Mile Race on the scenic Mt. Vernon Trail south of Alexandria,  The 20-Miler starts at 7:30 a.m., the 5-Miler goes off shortly thereafter.  The longer race is currently filled due to a decrease, announced only last week, in the number of racers allowed this year on the trail by the Park Service, but Race Director Chuck Evans, assisted by VP of Racing Ben Richter, is negotiating with the Park Service for a possible return to the old limit of 500 runners.  Stay tuned (but there will be no race-day registration in any case).  Packet pickup is on Saturday at Gotta Run at 1101 S. Joyce St. in South Arlington from 11-4 p.m.  If you can volunteer for this race, please go to the race's page on this website to sign up.

Club Picnic and 3-Miler & Special Tues. Night Run

August has arrived and with it a full slate of events. In addition to the Bluemont 5K earlier this week, we have two special events coming up on the next five days.

The Club Picnic and 3-Mile Cross Country Run are this Saturday, August 8, at 5:30 PM, at the Landon School in Maryland.  More information such as directions, preregistration, and contact information is available here. Anyone who can volunteer at this event, please contact Race Director Rob Wolfe

The Club is pleased to bring you a special Tuesday Night Run! This run will be held Tuesday evening, August 11, starting at 6:30 PM at a special location, K Street near 33rd Street under the Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown. Runner's World, in conjunction with Saucony and with a special appearance by running celebrity Bart Yasso, will participate in this special running of the club's weekly run.  Bart will be giving out copies of his book, "My Life on the Run" and Runner's World will be giving out the magazine, plus other benefits will be offered.  The 4-5 mile run on the Mall will commence around 7:15 PM. Look for the Runner's World van. Thanks to Katie Madison, and Rachel Bonistalli, for working to bring this special event to the club.

The Paul Thurston 4.5 Miler is going to be held on Tuesday evening, August 18, at Burke Lake in Virginia at 6:45 PM. More information including direction and preregistration are available here. Race Director Karol Murray is looking for volunteers.

Sign-ups have started for the Larry Noel 12K (formerly 15K) to be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009.  More information on the event is available here.  Race Director Ben Richter is looking for volunteers.

Saturday, July 4th: Age-Handicapped 4-Miler & last Jump Start

Saturday July 4th is the Age-Handicapped 4-Miler starting at 8 a.m. at Carderock in MD, a Bunion Derby race. This race along the soft surface of the C&O Canal Towpath features 20 different starting times based on age adjustments, with older & wiser runners starting before runners who have much less experience in life. Contact RD Ian Clements, 703-838-2026, if you can help out with this race.

Also at 8 a.m. on July 4th is the last meeting at Gotta Run in South Arlington for the Jump Start prequel to the Army Ten-Miler Training Program, which DCRRC is the exclusive partner for. The Program officially starts on July 11th with a run of 3 miles at Gotta Run and also at the Georgetown Running Company, but the free four-week Jump Start prequel will enable committed persons new to running to be able to start the Program along with other runners. Everyone is welcome at this last Jump Start event, where we’ll go 3 miles after warmups. Over 100 persons have signed up online at this website for the Program. You can too!

On Monday July 6th at 7 p.m. the DCRRC Board will meet at the Silver Diner in Clarendon for club business. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The club has added a regular Tuesday evening run option to its battery of programs. An outgrowth of the training programs, this free Tuesday night Beer & Burritos Run of slightly more than four miles leaves at 7:15 p.m. from Rosslyn every Tuesday and runs over the Memorial Bridge into the District, up to Key Bridge and back into Rosslyn, where interested epicures can sample the cerveza and beans at the local Chipotle. The run has a its own webpage, complete with directions and late-breaking developments, on this website under Weekly Runs.

The club is the owner of a new van, a white 2008 Chevy Express Van. This vehicle is considerably larger than the one it replaced, and anyone using it should be aware of this fact and take great care in driving it around corners and in tight spaces.
