Club social event: Next week, to celebrate the winners of last winter’s Snowball Series club races, the basement room of an Alexandria eatery has been reserved for a pizza, salad and soft drinks buffet for all who attend. Join us on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 7pm at Generous George's, 3006 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
Sign-ups: The club’s Marathon Training Program, a 4-month program targeting the MCM (or any fall marathon), starts on June 6th and is now accepting registrations. The cost is $95 and includes club membership (or $75 for club members) and requires that you be able to run 10 miles on the first day. Please be aware that on June 6th, the SLR schedule switches from its wintertime 8am start to its summertime 7am start every Saturday morning at Iwo Jima. This long run will be the staple of the MTP.
DCRRC is the exclusive training partner for the Army Ten-Miler Race on October 4th. This 13-week club training Program costs $70 and includes club membership (or $60 for club members), starts on July 11th and is now accepting registrations. Please be able to run 3 miles by that date. A free 4-week "jump-start" component of the program for persons new to running, to train them to be able to go 3 miles by the start of the program, will start on June 13th.
The National Capital 20-Mile/5-Mile Race on September 27th is open for discounted, early registration.
News Announcement: This month was the last month that the club provided sponsorship of the monthly noontime Tidal Basin 3K Run.
The Tidal Basin 3K is a free, informal monthly noontime 1.86-mile run on the sidewalks around the downtown DC Tidal Basin, which houses the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial and, when it is constructed, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. This run, held on the third Wednesday of every month, dates back to the early 70s. The current director, Jay Wind, has done a tremendous job for years putting on this event and tabulating the results for each participating runner, whose time is posted each month.
Following a full discussion on the matter, after taking comments from anyone who attended the open board meeting who cared to speak on the matter, the current Club Board voted at the last Board Meeting to end the club’s long-standing relationship with the run. The club’s former association with the run has now been fully severed, and the club has no official or implicit involvement or association with the run anymore. Jay Wind has become the president of a new entity, an oversight organization created before the last run which is wholly unrelated to DCRRC. The new organization will keep this venerable event going in its traditional form (except for the sponsorship of DCRRC). We wish the new organization, and the monthly run, all the best in the future.
Next club race on the calendar: The Triple Crown races on Saturday, June 6th at Fort Hunt Park in Alexandria. Anyone who would like to volunteer at this horse-themed set of races, in order to meet their yearly club volunteer commitment to be eligible for a Snowball Series or Bunion Series award, please contact the race director James Scarborough at James.Scarborough@med.navy.mil
The club needs volunteer coaches for the MTP and the Ten-Miler Training Program: Contact Kenny Ames, VP of Training, if you're interested in helping out with these crucial club programs. The RRCA is currently offering a 2-day coaching certification program in its Arlington offices during the MCM weekend in October on the Friday and Saturday before the marathon. The club will reimburse the cost of certification to anyone who is a volunteer coach, and who commits to coaching three more subsequent programs in the next two years (10K, MTP, Ten-Miler, National Marathon, National Half-Marathon Programs). The RRCA coaching certification slots fill up fast, don't delay in signing up if you're interested.
