Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route will be Upton Hill (additional map here), for an out & back of about 12 miles. For a shorter run, you can turn around at any point earlier to get your target distance (though you'll miss the fun of the big hill at the turnaround!). If you're looking for anything beyond 12 miles, we'll be on the Custis Trail, which you can use to connect to the W&OD Trail and go as long as you like.
For another option to run 12 miles this weekend, the JFK 20K & MLK 5K will also be on Saturday morning. You can sign up to run both races for an extra challenge, but don't forget to register twice (using a different email address for each) if this is your plan. Check the club website for a full Snowball Series schedule, and links to sign up for either running or volunteering at any of the other races. You can also get series volunteer credit by signing up for at least 2 weeks of SLR post-run drinks!
Though it's 65 deg today, there's again some snow in the forecast this Saturday. As long as the current forecast for less than 1 in of accumulation holds out, I don't expect that we will need to cancel SLR, however if you're ever unsure, check the club's facebook page or look for an SLR announcement/email on Saturday morning by about 6:30 am.
We currently do not have post-run drinks for the next two weeks due to lack of volunteers, so please let me know right away if you can help out with this. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, and becuase it's a relatively easy job. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
Happy 2017! As the frst SLR of the new year, we will be doing the Battery Kemble Loops (additional map here) route, for 16 miles. You can easily shorten this to 14 miles by running only to the base of Battery Kemble Park and turning around, without doing the standard 2 loops. For less than 14 miles, I'd suggest simply turning around sooner along this (mostly) out & back route.
The forecast this Saturday is looking cold and cloudy, with temperatures in the low to mid 20s. Bundle up, bring your hat & gloves, and I'll see you on Saturday morning to generate our own heat! If you're not already used to cold weather running, as a general rule I'd suggest dressing with the approximate level of warmth that you'd want in similar conditions if it were 20 degrees warmer and you were outdoors but not running. Just because it's cold doesn't mean you won't sweat, so wicking fabrics are still probably the best choice, and a change of clothes or at least a jacket to toss on post-run will help fight the chill after you stop moving.
Don't forget our upcoming Snowball Series races, and the JFK 20K & MLK 5K next weekend on Saturday the 14th as an alternate choice from SLR. Check the club website for a full series schedule, and links to sign up for either running or volunteering at any of the races. You can also get series volunteer credit by signing up for at least 2 weeks of SLR post-run drinks!
Thanks to Kyle Edgerton for again covering post-run drinks, beyond his initial volunteer period! We need more volunteers to step up starting now to carry us into the new year, so please let me know any time when you'll be able to help out for at least 2 consecutive weeks. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, you should do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!

Hello Saturday Runners!
For your last run of 2016, on New Year's Eve morning we will be doing a 15 mile loop to Long Bridge Park (additional map here). To shorten the run to about 10 miles, you can take a left off of Crystal Drive just before 18th St. to cut over onto the Mt. Vernon Trail at National Airport. If you'd rather add distance, you can return all the way up the Mt. Vernon Trail to Rosslyn for an extra mile, or add laps of Roosevelt Island on the way for even more miles. If you showed up for last Saturday's soggy and cold run (congrats to those who did!), the weather should be much better this week, with cool temps and dry skies!
Thanks again this week to Kyle Edgerton for post-run drinks! We now need more volunteers starting next week, to carry us into the new year, so please let me know any time when you'll be able to help out for at least 2 consecutive weeks. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route schedule are always kept up-to-date on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, you should do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!
Mike
