Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR October 3 - Capital Crescent / Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

The route for Saturday October 3 will be 23 miles on the Capital Crescent / Rock Creek Loop (aka Big Loop) (additional map here). Three weeks out from the Marine Corps Marathon, this is a good chance to log your last long run. If you're not looking for a run quite this long, you can start with the group and do an out & back along the Captial Crescent Trail, turning around at any point.

Because of the heavy rain in the forecast, it's possible that the route will need to be modified to avoid some areas of Rock Creek Park that tend to flood. However, if no further announcements are made, then the plan will be to run the regularly schedule route.

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Rich Mendelowitz will be leading the run in my absence.

Please thank Angela Katson for post-run beverages, and Aaron Cheskis for mid-run beverages! We still need one more mid-run volunteer for next week before this wraps up for the fall. Though we're covered for the next few weeks of post-run drinks, we could use someone to take the last 2 weeks of October. A scheudle of routes and volunteer needs is posted on the SLR page so let me know what you can cover. Please email me any dates you'd like to do mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR September 26 - Arlington Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route on Saturday September 26 will be Arlington Triangle (additional map here) for 16 miles. To get 18 miles, at Lynn St. you can continue on the Mt. Vernon Trail past Roosevelt Island and back via Memorial Bridge, or to get a shorter run I would suggest turning the route into an out & back.

Don't forget that the Clarendon Day street festival (as well as 5K & 10K races) are happening on Saturday morning, so you may run into some street closures on your way to or from SLR. You can find details on street closures here. You might also bump into the 10K race underway when crossing Wilson Blvd on your way back to North Meade St Park at the end of Arlington Triangle, so please use caution, be courteous to race participants, and follow directions from any course marshalls who may be at the intersection.

Thanks this week go to Rodney Ast for post-run beverages, and to Elizabeth Haxthausen for mid-run beverages! We have no volunteers scheduled after this week, so please get in touch with me if you can help with either mid-run or post run drinks. These are both entirely volunteer supported, and won't resume until we get volunteers!

Mike

SLR September 19 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

I hope everyone has been getting out and about in the excellent Fall-like mornings we've had this week! Our route on Saturday, September 19, will be Battery Kemble Loops for about 16 miles (additional map here). You can shorten the route to 14 miles by running everything as written on the cue sheet, except skipping the two loops of Battery Kemble park. To shorten the route further, simply turn around and retrace your steps when you've reached half your desired distance. Extra mileage beyond 16 can be added either with additional loops of Battery Kemble park, or extra out-and-back distance on the Captial Crescent Trail.

Thank you Rodney Ast for post-run beverages, and thanks also to Rory Quirk for our mid-run beverage station! We are in need of post-run volunteers starting on October 3, and mid-run volunteers for two Saturdays in October, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know if you can cover either of these. As always, you can email me any dates you'd like to do mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club. Please volunteer; it's your duty if you regularly participate in SLR!

Happy running!

Mike
