SLR Nov 26 - Rock Creek Park out and back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, November the 26th, we will be running the Rock Creek Park out and back route. The listed route mileage is 16 miles; mileage options are provided after the directions. Please thank Mike Tosto for post-run beverages.

Directions : Go from Iwo Jima down to Memorial Bridge, cross the bridge and go North along Rock Creek Park trail, passing the Kennedy Center and Watergate on your right, and Georgetown on your left.  At 4.2 miles out, stay on the main trail and go around the tunnel, not through it.  At 5 miles out, trail passes the Zoo entrance.  Continue North along the bike path.   At 6.5 miles out, at Peirce Mill, water fountain (probably off) on trail and bathroom stop to side.   Just past Peirce Mill, trail passes a parking lot, crosses a road and empties out onto Beach Rd, which is closed to cars here on weekends.   At 8.3 miles out is the Park Ranger Station.  Turn around and head back the same way for a 16.6 mile run.  More info. and map in the cue sheet.

Approx. Mileage Options:

10: Turn around at Zoo entrance for 10 miles total.

13: Turn around at Peirce Mill for 13 miles total.

16: Turn around at Park Ranger station for 16.6 miles total.

24: You can continue on Beach Rd. all the way to the beltway, but this is over 24 miles total.

As I mentioned last week, the SLR routes are posted through the end of January and are geared towards the GW Birthday Marathon (A DCRRC race), National Rock-n-Roll Marathon, and Boston Marathon, with long runs every 2 or 3 weeks, and the final long run 3 weeks out from each race. We will be sharing most of our routes with the DCRRC Spring Marathon and Half-Marathon training programs (who start/finish in Georgetown), so be sure to say "Hi"!

We still need volunteers to do drinks for the 2nd half of December (and beyond) so please consider helping out. Remember, if no one volunteers we don't get to have yummy Gatorade to drink.  The club reimburses your expenses.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Hope everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving complete with lots of Carbs.  See you tomorrow morning – The weather should be great for running, with temps in the high 40s and plenty of sunshine!

-- Erik
