Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR June 18 - RFK

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route will be the RFK loop.  It's an "enhanced" out and back, across the Memorial Bridge, down the Mall, past the Capitol, stopping at Ben Richter's Famous Capitol Hill Water Stop (thank you, Ben!), looping around RFK, and returning back to Iwo Jima for some post-run refreshment transported to Iwo Jima for your convenience through the hard work and dedication of Post-Run Beverage Bringers Lindsey Paola, Chris Miller, and Rick DeSaussure.

If you wish, you may print a cue sheet by clicking the link above.  Looking for street signs on this route has shown to be much more trouble than it is a help.  Consequently, as a group we do not use a cue sheet for this route, but rather follow our sightlines to the many famous landmarks that lead us down the straightforward route.

Enjoy the sights and the run, and please thank your helpful beverage volunteers.  The next week we have a need for someone to step up and volunteer is July 2.  If you can help, please let me know!  It will be *a* Glover/Rock Creek loop, I am simply waiting to hear exactly which one we are to do... so if not knowing the route is holding you back, that is the general idea of where we will be.

Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered.  It is great to have things settled BEFORE we go to sleep the night before the run!  I do appreciate that so many of you have stepped up to help us all!

See you tomorrow,

Kristin

June 11 SLR - Fort Scott Hill

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route wil be a slightly modified Fort Scott Hill Route.  It will begin as usual on the Mt. Vernon Trial and into and through Crystal City, the up Fort Scott Drive where Joe Emerson will have our refreshments at the top of the hill.

Then the modification begins.  Rather than tumbling back down the steep hill, we will continue on lovely Ft. Scott Drive to 23rd street, then run back through Crystal City and the Mt. Vernon Trail.  More details and options in this link:  (you may also wish to use this to memorize the route and/or print your own cue sheet)

Be sure to thank Joe for bringing those top of the hill refreshments!!!

And thank Lindsey, Rick, and Chris for the post-run beverages, too!  (Also, be sure to remember to bring your own hydration from home to start yourself off, so there will be sufficient POST run beverages for all to enjoy.)

Hope to see you all tomorrow!
