October News

DCRRC Members and Guests:

1. NewsletterYou should shortly receive your copy of RacePacket in the mail; be sure to check out the DCRRC Newsletter pages.

2. Bunion Derby Awards Night: The Bunion Derby Awards get-together will be held Monday, October 29, at 7:00 pm at Cactus Cantina, Wisconsin Avenue (just north of the Cathedral) in Washington DC. We look forward to seeing the winners, their guests, and other Club members at this fun event.

3. Preparing for 2008: While our race calendar slows a bit in October and November, the work of the Club goes on -- in this case, preparing for an exciting 2008 racing and training year. Here's a few highlights:

a. Race Directors Needed: Directors are needed for the following events:

(i) Belle Haven 25K, typically run in late February. After many years at the helm, John Haubert is stepping aside to a consultant's role. The race is a challenging one for the runners, and John has figured out over the years what makes it work. Please let me know if you can step up to take charge of this event.

(ii) Paul Thurston 4.5M (Burke Lake): This is the traditional closure to the Bunion Derby series. Run in mid-August. Yours truly has directed for several years and needs to hand the reins on. Hopefully, someone who lives in the vicinity can help out with this one.

b. Club Championship Series: We will add a new series, consisting of all races in calendar 2008 that are designated as Club Championships. This entails all distances from 1-Mile (Track, late July) to the Marathon (Greenbelt, in February). In between: 5K, 4-Mile, 10K, 12K, 15K, 10-Mile, 20K, 25K, 20-Mile. Prizes will be good! 5-year age groups. Look for further news.

c. Race calendar Now is the time to speak if you have ideas for the 2008 Race Calendar. A draft calendar will be posted on this website by October 30th; the Board will meet to amend and approve the schedule at its meeting on November 12th, 7:00, Clarendon Grill. PLEASE let us know as soon as possible if you have suggestions and ideas. Priority at the November 12 meeting will be given to those suggestions that we have received before the meeting. If you have general questions about the philosophy of our race schedule, and events that might be added, now also is the time -- the November 12 meeting is not the time for a open-ended discussion (although appropriate time will be given to ideas we receive in advance).

d. National Marathon, March 29, 2008 -- New Partnership: After serving as a "cooperating club" at the 2007 running of the National Marathon, DCRRC will step up its role and its involvement for the 2008 race. Details will be announced in this space as soon as they are available. PLEASE enter early for the race (Marathon or Half) if you plan to run, and PLEASE designate that you are a member of DCRRC on your entry form.

Thanks,

Ed

October Events; Track Workouts

Club Members and Guests:

1. 20-Miler Thanks: I'll have more to say on this later, but a quick thanks for now to those who directed, volunteered for, and participated in the 29th Annual National Capital 20-Miler on Sunday. It was a again a reminder of what a great race this is, and what a great Club this is. The volunteer support was outstanding.

2. Bunion Derby Awards: Bunion Derby Awards will be distributed on October 29th at 7:00. Site will be posted here tomorrow. Please mark your calendars.

3. Cross Country Race, October 13th: We will once again host a 5K cross-country event in conjunction with the Landon School Invitational on Saturday October 13th. Time will be 12 noon. This is another chance to run on the great Landon course, site of our Club picnic race in August. Stick around afterwards to see some fine high school runners in the Invitational races.

4. Track Workouts: Workouts are posted on the Track Workouts page. For tonight, October 3rd, the workout is 2 x 15-minute tempo runs, with a 2-minute break. Finish with 2 x 400M, with a 200M jog interval.

5. Army 10-Miler: Many Club members will be racing the Army 10 this weekend. Special mention must be made of our 10-Mile training group, which has been working hard all summer to prepare for this race. Congratulations to them, and thanks to their coaches. Their performances will be posted on this blog at some point next week.

6. Chicago Marathon: Good luck to all DCRRC Members traveling to the Second City this weekend for the Chicago Marathon! We'll try to have a report for you next week on our finishers.

Run well!

Ed

20-Miler and Rediscovery 10K -- Final Updates

Club Members and Guests:

A lot coming up this weekend, with the 20-Miler highlighting the events.

1. 20-Miler Packet Pick-Up will be at Gotta Run, 1101 South Joyce St., on Pantagon Row in South Arlington. Time is from 11 AM TO 3 PM. Please use packet pick-up on Saturday if you possibly can, in ordet to make things easier for yourself (and the race officials) on Sunday morning.

2. No Headphones Rule Will Be Enforced: Pursuant to the rules adopted by the sport's governing bodies, the Road Runners Club of America, and USA Track and Field, no headphones are permitted in any race sponsored by DCRRC. This rule will be enforced at the 20-Miler. Please leave your headphones at home, or have a plan to leave them someplace safe during the race.

3. 20-Miler Registration Still Open: We are close to our race limit, but some spots are still open for the 20-Miler. Please register at the packet pick-up on Saturday. We cannot guarantee that there will be any spots available for same-day registration.

4. Volunteers: We are blessed with a great number of folks who have volunteered to help with these races. If you have not signed up but can help, please let us know. "Early shift" volunteers for the 20-Miler should report by 6:30-6:45 at the Sandburg Middle School. Those working the later and clean-up shift should report by 9:30. If there is anybody who would like to work at the Rediscovery 10K in West Potomac Park, please CALL me at 571-217-6547 at your earliest convenience.

Run well,

Ed
