2/13 Track Cancelled & Other Important News

Club Members & Guests:

DON'T FORGET: VOLUNTEERS AND ATHLETES ARE NEEDED FOR THE GWB MARATHON ON 2/17/08 AND THE CLUB CHALLENGE 10-MILER ON 2/24/08. SEE FURTHER DETAILS BELOW!

1. February 13 Track Workout Cancelled: Due to predicted inclement weather, and the likelihood that lights will not be available as a result, the track workout for February 13 is cancelled.

Snow is forecast, after a morning of icy road conditions. When we recently had conditions like this, the high school was shut down for the evening, and there were no lights. Given the likely track conditions, that creates an unacceptable safety condition.

Runners are encouraged to incorporate some "tempo" stretches into a treadmill workout, or to do so as part of your Saturday long run.

2. 10K Training Program to Start: The annual 10K training program, which welcomes all levels but is particularly helpful to novice and beginning runners, will kick-off on Saturday, February 23rd. Meeting point will be the West Falls Church Metro station, with easy access to the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. The group will meet on the top level of the parking garage at 9:00 am. The West Falls Church Metro is located near the intersection of Route 7 and I-66, at 7404 Haycock Road.

Cost for the program is $35. The "goal" race is the Capitol Hill Classic 10K, run in May. Program fee does not include the entry fee for the race.

More details will be posted here, and under the "Programs" button, in a few days.

Thanks to Peter Lamberton for once again directing the program!

3. DCRRC Annual Meeting, Elections, and Banquet, March 30: PLEASE SAVE THE DATE! Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 5:00 p.m., at Maggiano's at 5333 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington DC, near Friendship Heights Metro, is the date and place of our annual meeting, elections, and banquet. Keynote speaker will be Keith Dowling, former international class athlete and direction of the National Marathon. Other awardees and speakers will be announced over the next few weeks.

Reservations can be made through the RacePacket website at the following address: www.racepacket.com/secure/dcdin/html

4. GWB Marathon, Sunday February 17: Volunteers Needed! The 47th Annual George Washington's Birthday Marathon, one of the nation's oldest 26.2 mile events, needs your support! We have runners signed up from around the country, and still need volunteers for the water stops and sentry points along the way. We realize this will be a chilly day, but it's also a lot of fun to be out on the beautiful Greenbelt course and cheer on both the marathoners, and the Marathon Relay participants.

There is a link to the Marathon under the Race Calendar button to your left. If you can volunteer, please email race director Pat Brown at
pbrown@noblis.org

5. GWB Marathon: Entries Still Open: For thos ewho prefer to run the marathon, entries are still open. The GWB Marathon is Race #6 in the Bunion Derby. Entries are still open as well for the 3-person Marathon Relay. See the webpage for the Marathon under Race Calendar for further information.

6. 10-Mile Challenge, Sunday Feb. 24 -- Athletes Needed: The annual Washington area RRCA club challenge will be held Sunday, 2/24/08 in Columbia, Maryland. Enter at www.striders.net Please use entry code: cDsm55 The Club will pay all entry fees, as well as provide incentives for those who participate. We need runners of all abilities to fill out our teams -- the more runners we have, the higher place we are likely to obtain in the team competition.

Car-pooling will be available. Please contact DCRRC team coordinator Aaron Cheskis for further information:
aaron.cheskis@gmail.com

7. Capital Hospice/DCRRC 12K: Kudos to James Scarborough, our friends at the Capital Hospice, and all who participated in the annual Custis Trail 12K on Saturday February 9th. Perfect running conditions were offset only slightly by the very challenging climbs up and back on the Custis Trail. Thanks to our friends at Arlington County Parks and recreation for making available our new starting point at Bluemont Park, which seemed to work very well.

We hope to see many of you in Greenbelt on the 17th!

Feb. '08 Races: 12K, Marathon; 10M Club Challenge

Club Members & Guests:

A busy month ahead. Here's the rundown.

1. Custis Trail/Capital Hospice 12K, 10:00 am on Sat. 2/09/08: This annual challenging race will be run again this year from Bluemont Park. Note that we will be using the South pavilion for race registration. Also, the race will start in the fields adjacent to the pavilion, allowing the runners to spread out a bit before hitting the trail. Finally, we will institute separate starts. The first start, at 10:00 am, will be for runners who anticipate a pace of 12 minutes per mile or slower. Following that will be a start for the female field, and following that, the men. There will be about a 3-5 minute gap between the starts.

These new procedures are necessary to comply with trail use rules for Arlington County. They allow us to enter the trail without overwhelming other users, and thus promote safety.

A couple of rules to remember. As always, no headphones. Also, please stay on the PAVED portions of the trail. This is for environmental reasons.

Please come out and enjoy this great race, and benefit the Capital Hospice. Details are under the Race Calendar link, to the left of this page.

Volunteers are still needed for registration and some course marshalling.

2. George Washington Birthday Marathon and Marathon Relay, 2/17/08: The 47th edition of this marathon, one of the nation's oldest continuously-held marathons, will take off Sunday, Feb. 17th, in Greenbelt, Maryland. start time is 10:30 am. Volunteers are strongly needed for this event. Even if you can only come for a few hours, we need your help.

The Marathon Relay, run in conjunction with the marathon, includes three legs ranging from 7.3 to 9.7 miles.

Please note that the course closes -- all runners must be finished -- by no later than 4:30 pm, six hours after the start. Please let the race officials know BEFORE the race if you anticipate finishing in greater than 5 hours.

If you can volunteer, please contact race director Pat Brown at:

pbrown@noblis.org

3. Club Challenge 10-Miler, Columbia, MD, 2/24/08: I will post further informatino on how to register for this event, which starts at 8:00 a.m., at mid-week. Registration and further information is available at the website of the Howard County Striders,
www.striders.net

DCRRC will pay the registration fee for all members who enter. The more of us who register, the greater the chance we have of scoring high in this team competition.

4. Wirefly National Marathon and Half-Marathon, 3/29/08: While these races are more than a month away, it's time register to run if you plan to do so.

The Club has committed to putting a number of volunteers on the course to support this race. If you can volunteer on race day, please contact the Club president.
