President's Blog -- Week of July 16, 2006

Club Members --
First, I have heard that many of you have not been receiving the Club emails. I made a fix that I hope will remedy this and I'll check with some of you at this week's workout and race to see if things are working better. Just so you know, the content of the emails is largely replicated in these Blog updates.
Second, it is a pleasure to report that all three of our major summer programs -- Bunion Derby, Marathon Training, and 10-Mile Training -- are now underway. The 10-Mile Program commenced in the sultry weather on Saturday morning under the tutelage of Kristin Blanchat and her fine group of "sub-coaches." Thanks to all the volunteers who are supporting these programs.
Third, thanks to first-time race director Mike Fox-Boyd for doing such a fine job at Friday night's Bastille Day 4-Miler on the Capital Crescent Trail. Kudos also to the large number of volunteers who supported this event. The new course configuration -- one mile west, two miles east, then one mile west back to the start -- seemed to work well and allowed for much easier set-up of the water stop. Look for this set-up at future races along the trail and towpath.
Fourth, we need volunteers for the Belle Haven 8K this Thursday evening at 7:00 pm. Scott Boggess is the race director. Contact Scott or the Club President if you can volunteer.
Fifth, please watch out for the weather this week. Monday and Tuesday are forecast to have highs of 99F. Wednesday (track) and Thursday (race) are forecast in the high 80s, but with high humidity. You can expect that we will adjust the track workout in light of the conditions.
Sixth, our next club race after Belle Haven is the Mile/3K Track Championships, on Wednesday July 26 at 7:00 pm, Washington-Lee HS. Volunteers will be needed to this event as well.
Seventh, our Club Picnic and 3-Mile race will take place Sunday August 13th at the Landon school in Bethesda, MD. Thanks to Rob and Judy Wolfe for directing, and to the good folks at Landon, including track coach Addison Hunt, for hosting us.
Finally, due to weather-based cancellation of the Landon X-C race on June 27th (Bunion #2), scoring for the Bunion Derby will count a maximum of four races, as opposed to five. so, your best four performances in the series will be the basis for your final score.
See you on the roads, at the track, and at Thursday's race.

July 10 Update -- Board Meeting Agenda Included

Club Members and Guests --

This is an updated version of our July 8 Weekly Update. It includes a draft agenda for the Board Meeting.

Please note that our regularly-scheduled bi-monthly meeting of the Board will take place on Monday July 10 at 7:00 pm. Location is Silver Diner in Clarendon. An agenda will be sent to Club e-mail list on Sunday. If you are not on the Club e-mail list and would like to be, please contact our webmaster Bill Bonduran. Boadr Meetings are held on the second Monday of every other month (forthcoming meetings in September, November, January, etc.), or at other times by special notice.

1. Thanks to Ian and Sarah Clements for their successful direction of the 4-Mile Age-Handicapped Race on July 4th. Congratulations to Pat Griffith and Naomi Stanford for their well-deserved age-graded victories.

2. Our next Club Race is the ever-popular Bastille Day 4-Miler, starting at 7:00 on July 14th at Fletcher's Cove. Race is run in toward Georgetown and back along the Capital Crescent Trail. Volunteers are still needed! Thanks to Mike Fox-Boyd for agreeing to direct the race.

3. We are in the process of moving the club van and equipment to a more central location in Arlington. If there is anybody in Arlington who has some spare garage or basement space for items (including a couple of stacks of large cones and a wheel-barrow) that take up space but are not frequently used, please let us know. We will also explore a rented storage space for excess equipment. Our collective thanks to Pat Brown for his many years of overseeing the van and equipment, as well as getting the equipment to our races. Thanks Pat!

4. The Club 20-Miler is coming in September. Entries are now open. We are urgently in need of a team of volunteers make sure that we get race t-shirts produced and to handle pre-race racket pick-up on Saturday September 23rd. Please contact Club President if you can help!

5. Finally, as I stated in the recent Club e-mail newsletter, please exercise caution in running in the heat. One key statistic to watch is the Dew Point. If it is 70 or above, you should significantly curtail the intensity of your workout. We had one scary heat-related incident at the July 4th race, which was run at 8:00 am. So, while running early in the day is strongly advised, it is not an insurance policy against heat-related problems. Remember that this weather will pass in time for longer and more intense workouts in the fall -- be ready for them, not burned out!

Run safe and well!

Ed
