Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome!  This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is 8:00 am. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Mike if you have any other questions that are not covered.

We are always looking for volunteers to bring post-run beverages for the group, and mid-run beverages during the summer. To help, please check out the schedule of needs below and email Mike to book your slot. More info on what you need to do as a volunteer (it's easy!) is on our FAQ page. If you regularly attend SLR and enjoy the free drinks then you should also be volunteering!

SLR Updates

Hello Everyone,

Just a few things:

First, I will not be at SLR tomorrow.....many thanks to Heather Schloss for volunteering to both be the sub-SLR leader and post-run beverage person :)

Remember that the club banquet is this Sunday, March 25:
Our Club's annual meeting and banquet will take place on Sunday, March 25th, at the Clarendon Grill in Arlington, starting at 4:00 pm. As promised, we have a very exciting speaker: Chris Lear, author of "Running With the Buffaloes" and "Sub 4:00: Alan Webb and the Quest for the Fastest Mile." Chris is a native of New Jersey, and ran at both The Pingry School and Princeton University, where he was a teammate of All-American Scott Anderson, a regular participant in the Club's Wednesday night workouts.

Finally, I am in need of a post-run Beverage volunteer for the month of April. This basically involves buying and bringing lots of gatorade, water, and cups to SLR. The club covers the cost (you just submit your receipts for reimbursement to the club treasurer)....we just need someone to do the "work". Please let me know if you are interested!

Cheers,
:)Kerry.

SLR Updates

Hi Everyone,

First, please be sure to thank Thane Underdahl for providing the post-run beverages for February (and even baking cookies for yesterday's post-run festivities :)) when you see him!

For the month of March, Heather Schloss, Mark Peterson, and I will be jointly covering the post-run beverages....be sure to thank us when you see us too :))

Anyone interested in signing up to volunteer for post-run beverages in April?!? Let me know!

Here is the list of routes for the month of March. Many thanks to Rob Wolfe for designing this month's list of routes :)
Note that Rob has noted how folks might make the route longer on March 3 and March 17...as a means to accomodate folks who are and are not training for marathons.

Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to seeing you all at SLR soon,
:)Kerry.
