Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR for Oct 31

This week we again have more than one option for time and distance.

There may be some nice fall colors to observe on both routes this week, and we've also got a midpoint stop serving both time/distance options at Pierce Mill, thanks to Elizabeth Haxthausen.  Post-run beverages will again be provided by Eleanor Evans.  Please thank our volunteers, and if you can help in future weeks, please let me know-- we need you!

The regular 8am route this week will be Ross Drive.  http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/RossDrive.html

Steve Easley will be leading the group preparing for later marathons on the 22.5 mile Capital Crescent/Rock Creek loop.  http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/CapitalCrescentRockCreekLoop.html.  If you need to get this extra mileage in, but were worried about not finishing until your friends ate all the pancakes at Whitlow's, don't despair-- this group will leave from Iwo Jima at 7am to knock out those miles with plenty of day left to spare!

Finally, a big congratulations to everyone who ran the Marine Corps Marathon last weekend.  We're all very proud of your performances!!

SLR News for MCM Weekend

Hello Saturday Runners!

This is MCM weekend, so there is a lot to report.  First, we are moving to our 8AM start time on Saturday!  The route on Saturday is the Cathedral/Clintons route.  Please thank Brian Danza for leading in my absence, and thank Eleanor Evans for providing the post-run beverages.

Because this is MCM weekend, there are also some pieces of news for Sunday!
On-Course Cheering: We will be gathering on 14th Street between C&D to support our runners with a cheering station.  Bring your cowbells and loud voices and any other support gear you like.  Look for those bright yellow DCRRC singlets and YELL!  Thanks to Brian Danza for setting this up!
Start/Finish Tent: For the second year in a row, DCRR will be co-hosting a special finisher's tent in the Charity Village (near Iwo Jima) for use by all club members and MTP participants.  This year we will be sharing our tent with World T.E.A.M. Sports.  See other information on the website, and check the MCM maps for specific location.  You may use the tent for your drop bags to avoid the 35,000-runner "real" drop bag system.  However, should anything be lost/misplaced/stolen, only you are responsible, so please do not leave valuables, and please do sign in.  Thanks to Karol Murray, Alex Barrage, and the DCRRC Board for arranging this great benefit for our MCM runners!
Tent Volunteers: We'd like to show our support by stocking the tent with goodies (food and drink) and staffing the tent with a volunteer to greet our finishers and hold down the fort from 6am - 2pm.  If you can take a shift, please send an email with the subject "MCM Tent", your name, and the times you can be available to slr@dcroadrunners.org.  If you don't specify times, you'll be given any shift of approximately 2 hours.  The schedule will be posted on the SLR page.
Thank you all for your help with these efforts, best of luck to all MCM runners, and have a Happy MCM Weekend!!
