Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

July 31 SLR - Glover/Mass/Cap Crescent

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route is the 13.5-ish mile Glover/Mass/Cap Crescent route.  The inbound portion of the route follows the Capital Crescent, and I think Karol will have our beverages juuuust off the Capital Crescent trail at Mass Ave, so if you don't like trails or want a different distance you can accommodate your individual needs with an out-and-back portion on Capital Crescent if you like.

I'll have tiny pocket-sized cue sheets, or feel free to create your own custom version - Glover/Mass/CapCrescent route.

Thanks to Karol Murray, Lindsey Paola, Colleen Marzec, and Chris Miller for beverages this week, and see you at 7!

SLR July 24 - Battery Kemble

Hello Saturday runners!

This week is supposed to be a hot one!  While our route, Battery Kemble, is one of our shadier and more water-fountain heavy routes, it's still going to be quite warm.  If you haven't been hydrating all week, start sipping water immediately.

6am and 7am start time options:
6AM: A group of coaches and regulars, including Mary Ellen Seale, Andrew Kent, Karol Murray, and Alex Barrage will be starting at 6:00 AM from Iwo Jima.
7AM: We'll also do the normal 7am start as usual.  If you want to start with the big group, but want to have some of the mileage under your belt so you finish earlier, other good options are to run to SLR from your home and metro/cab back, or to park a tad further away to run to and from your car (both of these help with parking stress, too).  As always, but especially tomorrow, be sure to carry water and phone numbers and try to avoid running alone.  You run at your own risk, but there's no reason not to minimize those risks!

There are at least two fountains on the Capital Crescent trail.  Tenley Ludewig will be providing the midroute beverages for our regular 7am starters, either at the top or the bottom of the hill on Chain Bridge road.  Colleen and Lindsey are still covering our July post-run beverages.  Please thank them!

On a less sweaty topic, there will be a happy hour for the Marathon Training Program on Thursday, July 29 at Black Finn in DC.  Thanks to Kyle White for setting this up.  Check the website for details.  All training program participants and all club members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Stay cool and hope to see you Saturday!
