Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR December 16 - MBT Catholic

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run, on Saturday, December 16, will be MBT Catholic (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for a 14 mile loop around the center of DC. If you'd like to run less than 14 miles, I'd suggest starting out along the route, and turning around at some point either along the Mall or Metropolitan Branch Trail, to make it an out & back.

Thank you Ryan Vaart for post-run drinks the last few weeks! We now need more volunteers to step up, since the post-run drink schedule is wide open with no volunteers currently scheduled. If you'd like this SLR benefit to continue, please take a look at your calendar and let me know what you can do! Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. For more details on how volunteering works, please see the SLR FAQ, or get in touch with me if your questions are not addressed there.

Nominations for 2017 club awards (presented at the Club Banquet in March 2018) will be accepted until January 7, 2018. You may submit multiple nominations, for the same or different awards. Self-nominations are allowed. Think back on all of the great accomplishmets within the club this year, and help your training buddies get recognized!

Happy running,

Mike

SLR December 9 - Upton Hill

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday, December 9, we will be running the 12 mile out & back route to Upton Hill (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). This is an easy route to shorten if your schedule calls for less distance, since you can just turn around at any point along the way before the mapped turn-around. For extra distance, you'll be on the Custis trail, so the W&OD trail is a nearby option that can add as much as you like. The weather forecast is looking cold and wet (with possible snow!) on Saturday morning, so be sure to bring your winter gear! Unless otherwise announced via email/facebook/twitter, the run will go on as scheduled.

Thank you Ryan Vaart for this week's post-run drinks! We're going to need more volunteers to step up soon, with a post-run drink schedule that's wide open after next week. Please take a look at your calendar and let me know what you can do!

SLR drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this perk, do your part to keep it going!

SLR December 2 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's long run is going to be out & back on the Rock Creek Park trail (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), for really any distance that you'd like. The club's winter/spring Marathon Training Program will begin meeting with us this week, and the first run on the training schedule is 10 miles, so that's our recommended distance this week. If you'd like to go either further or shorter however, it's easy to just turn around at whatever point is half of your total target distance. The turn-around point for 10 miles (5 miles out) is along the detour that goes around the tunnel that's just before the Zoo.

Thanks again to Michael Rohlf for post-run drinks over the past few weeks! We're going to need more volunteers to step up soon, with a post-run drink schedule that's wide open after the next 2 weeks. Please take a look at your calendar and let me know what you can do!
