Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR March 3 - Chain Bridge Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

If you're running the Rock n Roll DC Marathon it's now only one week until race day, so our scheduled run is on the shorter side at 10 miles, but with some hills in the first half to keep things fresh. The route will be 10 miles on Chain Bridge Loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), but if you'd like to extend it to either 12 or 14 miles, this is easy to do by following instead variation that's mapped as Marymount Chain Bridge (downloads: cue sheet and GPS).

Thank you Christine and Paul Westcott for providing our post-run drinks over the past month!! I now have an updated SLR schedule for the spring posted, and we are in dire need of post-run beverage volunteers for next week and beyond, so please get in touch with me right away if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Last call plug this week for the annual Club Banquet and Membership Meeting coming up on Sunday March 4, at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights! After cocktails and dinner, the event will feature presentation of our annual awards, a state of the club update, and a keynote address from local world-class ultra-runner Michael Wardian on his experience running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. The banquet is one of our signature events for the year, and is also a great way to spend some relaxed time off the roads with your running friends and their families! Please register in advance using the link above if you plan to attend.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR February 24 - Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week we will be runnig the 14.5 mile Ross Drive route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like, you can shorten the route by about 3 miles by skipping the Ross Drive section (even though that's the best part!) and simply run out & back to Broad Branch Rd. Since the Beach Drive portion of the standard Ross Drive loop is still closed, I'd suggest running out & back along Ridge Rd and Ross Drive instead of a loop. In addition, if we wind up with wet weather on Saturday, it may be better to bypass Lover's Lane and a possibly slippery/muddy trail portion of the route. The easiest way to do this while adding minimum distance is to continue on M St, and after 28th St but before the Rock Creek overpass, take a left onto a paved path going through a small park. This will dump you onto the main Rock Creek trail at the P St ramp.

Thank you Christine and Paul Westcott for providing our post-run drinks this week! I'm planning to have an updated and extended spring schedule posted by Saturday, an we will need a new volunteer in two weeks startin on March 10, so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Coming up on Sunday March 4, we will be holding the annual Club Banquet and Membership Meeting at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights! After cocktails and dinner, the event will feature presentation of our annual awards, a state of the club update, and a keynote address from local world-class ultra-runner Michael Wardian on his experience running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. SLR February 17 - C&O Canal Towpath

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week is out & back on the C&O Canal Towpath (download: cue sheet and GPS), for a scheduled distance of 20 miles if you're running the Rock & Roll Marathon coming up in a few weeks. Since this route is out & back, it's easy to modify for whatever distance you'd like - just turn around and head back when you reach your own half-way point! I'm still out of town this week, but Jonny will be there to kick of the run on Saturday morning.

Thank you Christine and Paul Westcott for providing our post-run drinks this week! We're actually all set on volunteers for the time being until I start planning further out, but the weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that get in touch with me if you'd like any additional details.

Registration is now open for the RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler, on February 26. This is a great race where you can represent our club among the other RRCA chapters in DC and Maryland, while testing yourself on a challenging course! The club will pay your $10 entry fee, but you must be a current DCRR club member in good standing, or else your name will be removed from the roster. We'll also provide bus transportation to the race, with pickup and dropoff at Courthouse and Dupont Circle, which you'll need to separately register for here if you'd like to reserve a spot.
