Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

Hello Saturday Runners!
Tomorrow's run will be 15 miles on the Long Bridge Park route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). With a hot day today and thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow afternoon, I would expect that we'll be contending with another humid morning, so don't forget to carry extra fluids.
If you'd like to run further than 15 miles, you can make this route about 17.5 miles by continuing up to Roosevelt Island on your way back, and adding an outer loop lap of the island's trail. Alternately, to shorten this to 12.5 miles, after you run through Crystal City and as you are heading south on S. Potomac Ave, take a right on South Glebe Road. Carefully cross Rt. 1, and take a left to continue south on Rt. 1. Very soon you will see the entrance ramp to the 4 Mile Run trail on your right. Take this down to loop under Rt. 1 and you will hit the Mt. Vernon Trail shortly. Take a left on Mt. Vernon trail to head north back to Iwo Jima.
Thank you Kate Scott for post-run drinks and Jerry McEnerney for mid-run drinks this week! Jerry will be located in Tide Lock Park, just after the 8 mile mark, on the Mt. Vernon Trail right before you start heading north along the river.
We have post-run beverages mostly covered for the rest of the summer, but will need more help with mid-run beverages after next week, so please let me know when you can help out. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This weekend's route is Piney Branch (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), for a little under 12 miles. If you'd like to lengthen it to 16 miles, continue straight up 16th St all the way past Military Rd to take a left on Joyce Rd. This will bring you to the top of the Beach Dr and Ross Dr loop, where you can head south and re-join the mapped route after adding 4 miles.
Thank you Kate Scott for post-run drinks and Kam Yee for mid-run drinks this week! Mid-run drinks will be located at about 6 miles into the run, on the side of the road as you're heading down Piney Branch Pkwy towards Rock Creek Park.
We have post-run and mid-run beverage volunteer coverage for the next couple weeks, but will need more help in September and beyond, particularly for mid-run drinks, so please let me know when you can help out. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ, or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
On August 4, our route will be Battery Kemble Loops (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 16 miles. If you'd like less than 16 miles, you can cut it down to 14 by running only to the base of Battery Kemble Park, and heading back to the start instead of running loops up and down the trail. For distance beyond 16, you can add as much as you like on the Capital Crescent Trail. Loops of Battery Kemble Park contain a trail section, and while the forecast on Saturday morning should be clear, there will have been a lot of rain on Thursday and Friday. If the trail is too soggy, you can run loops on the road instead going Chain Bridge - Nebraska - Foxhall - Garfield - 49th - Ashby. That sounds complicated but it's not so bad if you look at it on the map - except for a couple places, it's just all the right turns you can take.
Thanks this week go to Don Junta for post-run drinks, and Kate Scott for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be at 7 miles, at the base of Battery Kemble park, near the intersection of MacArthur Blvd and Chain Bridge Rd.
We're now actually in good shape with volunteers for the next couple weeks, but will need more help in September and beyond for both post-run drinks and mid-run drinks, so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.
Happy running,
Mike
