Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR May 25 - Glover Soapstone Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

First I'd like to remind everyone that after Memorial Day, starting on June 1 (next week) our meeting time will move up to 7:00 am. This will get us out there earlier and help stave off (if not beat) the heat during the summer months. Meeting time will shift back to 8:00 am in the fall, probably early October.

This Saturday, on May 24, the route will be Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 14 miles. You can cut off about a mile by returning over the Key Bridge instead of Memorial Bridge, or to cut an additoinal mile, take a right rather than a left on Connecticut, and return thru the Zoo instead of the Soapstone trail. For 10 miles or less, you can run out & back on the Glover - Archbold trail. Also, assuming that construction at the Glover - Archbold trail entrance is still ongoing, instead of the usual entry continue up Foxhall Rd NW, take a right on 44th St NW, and a right on P St NW which will end at an entry trail into Glover - Archbold Park.

You should have a nice sunny day for a run this week on Saturday, with temps in the mid 60s! I'm going to be out of town, but Andrew will introduce and start the run for you.

Big thanks to Charlotte and Mark Hyatt for extending thier volunteer block to cover this week's post-run drinks! We no longer have any SLR beverage volunteers on the schedule after this week so please get in touch with me ASAP if you can help. In addition, starting next week mid-run drinks are planned to begin again for the summer, but this won't happen until we get volunteers! The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR May 18 - Fort Scott Hill

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday's run, on May 18, will be the 11 mile Fort Scott Hill route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). This route is an out & back, so for a shorter distance you can turn around sooner, or for a longer run you can continue further down the Mt. Vernon Trail after running up and down the hill. To make this route more of a loop, you can also head back to the start by continuing on Fort Scott Dr. to a left on 23rd St, a right on Army-Navy Drive, and then a return past the Pentagon after going through the parking lot tunnel beneath I-395. I'm out of town this Saturday, but Franco will be there to introduce and kick off the run for you.

The medical respite facility Christ House in Adams Morgan has reached out to DCRRC with the following request looking for donations of athletic or comfortable shoes for men:

Christ House provides patients who are experiencing homelessness and who have medical conditions a new or very gently used pair of comfortable shoes. We are in constant need of comfortable athletic shoes for our patients. Currently, we are down to our last few pairs.

If you have any shoes that you'd be willing to contribute to Christ House, Anne Coia will collect them this week at SLR.

Thank you Charlotte and Mark Hyatt for providing this week's post-run drinks! We no longer have any SLR beverage volunteers on the schedule after this week so please get in touch with me ASAP if you can help. In addition, after Memorial Day mid-run drinks are planned to start up again, but volunteers are needed to make that happen! The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR May 11 - Potomac Overlook Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

Tomorrow morning's run, on May 11, will be Potomac Overlook Loops (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 12 miles. To get 12 miles you'll run 4 laps around the 1.25 mile loop in Potomac Overlook Park, so you can shorten this route running fewer laps if you'd like. Although it looks like a rainy weekend ahead, hopefully things will be dry enough for some trail running in the morning before the rain comes later on in the day!

Thank you Charlotte and Mark Hyatt for post-run drinks this week! We will need more post-run beverage volunteers after next week and beyond, as well as mid-run volunteers starting up again after Memorial Day, so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot.
