Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Sept 29 - Marine Corps Mock Route

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Sep. 29th, we will be running the Marine Corps Marathon Mock route. This route covers roughly the middle 16 miles of the Marathon Course, with other mileage options to follow.  Please review the cue sheet and map for full details. We continue to meet 8:00am at the small park NW of Iwo Jima.

Please thank Walter Barret and Liz Tripodi for our post-run drinks! We currently do not have anyone on deck for mid-run drinks.  This shouldn't be a big deal since its a bit cooler out now and there are plenty of water fountains along this route, so please get a drink if you are feeling hot.  Next week is the final long run before Marine Corps so we still could use a mid-run drink volunteer for that (as well as post-run drink volunteers for the coming months).  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Mileage Options:

11: After passing Lincoln Memorial, while on Ohio Drive, go left on West Basin Drive, before FDR memorial, and rejoin the route on Independence Ave heading west.

13.5: Cut off Hains Pt. by taking left on Buckeye Drive, rejoin route on Ohio Drive.

17: To add on a little over a mile, continue north on Mt. Vernon trail, past Roosevelt Island, and come back through Rosslyn.  You can add on loops around Roosevelt Island for even more at about 1.25 miles per loop.

I know that final hill will feel tough but you won't even notice it when you are finishing the Marathon and have thousands of people cheering you on! Have fun!

SLR Sept 22 - Glover to Rock Creek: 8 AM Start time!

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Sep. 22nd, we will be running the Glover to Rock Creek Park (via Tilden) route.  The route is a little under 14 miles, with options to follow.

We will now meet at 8:00am until next summer, so enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

Please thank Walter Barret and Liz Tripodi for our post-run drinks! Richard Rhoads will be providing us mid-run drinks so please say thank you to him as well. We still have a few more dates that need mid-run drink volunteers, and we need post-run drink volunteers for October and on - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org to sign up.

In club announcements:  The DCRRC National Capital 20 Miler and 5 Miler races are set for Sept 30th. If you aren't running im sure they could use volunteers too.  Speaking of, in addition to SLR volunteer needs, the club could use helpers for the Wilson Bridge Half-Marathon drink stop and Marine Corp. Marathon drink stop.  Email volunteer@dcroadrunners.org to help out.

Directions: Go through Rosslyn and take Key bridge, then C&O trail to reach Glover Park trails.  Run the Glover trails to the end, right on Van Ness, Right on Reno Street, then left on Tilden to reach Rock Creek Park.  Head south on Rock Creek Park trails passing the Zoo, eventually running past Georgetown and under the Kennedy Center, taking Memorial Bridge back.

Mileage Options:

9: If you wish to cut it short, 4 miles out, while on Glover Trail, go right on Massachusetts Ave, right in Sheridan Circle, quick right onto 23rd St, then another right onto P Street (water here).  Head down the hill to get back on Rock Creek park trails south toward Memorial Bridge to return.

15: To add ~1.5 miles: once near Lincoln, run out left side of mall, cross over 17th street, run back on other side of mall, take Memorial bridge back

16: To add ~2.25 miles: Run out to Washington Monument & back

18: To add ~4 miles: Run out to the Capital Building & back

More water spots along the mall if you get thirsty.  Have fun on the trail those first few miles and then you'll have a good chance to practice even pacing once we get into Rock Creek Park.
