Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR: 14 Miles Marymount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Long Runners!

It's hot out there! I am once again giving my yearly plea of please please please be careful out there tomorrow morning (and every morning, spoiler alert DC will just be like this (TM) until October). Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are extremely dangerous, remember the signs of each and take care of eachother:

Heat Exhaustion

Signs: Dizziness, Thirst, Heavy Perspiration, Cold or Clammy Skin, Nausea or Vomiting, Weakness/Exhaustion, Cramping, Headache.

Solutions: stop physical activity, move to a cooler area if possible, remove clothing, spray with water when it's an option, and drink water and electrolytes.

Next Steps: seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve within an hour

Heat Stroke

Signs: Confusion, Dizziness, Perspiration, No Perspiration but Hot to the Touch, Loss of Consciousness

Solutions: stop physical activity and CALL 911 (heat stroke is deadly!)

Next Steps: submerge in cool water up to shoulders if possible to do so safely, or move to a cooler place

What Not to Do: DO NOT give someone suffering from heatstroke anything to drink. They can vomit, pass out, and aspirate.

HEAT STROKE IS DEADLY If your fellow runner is disoriented, please call 911 immediately (and shoot me or one of the other DCRR board members an e-mail or text letting us know what has happened).
Now let's get into it:

The Route: We're going o'er hill and dale (keyword: hill) this week for Marymount Chain Bridge (strava, gps, pdf). We'll start by heading up the Rosslyn Hill then up Military Road before making a left into Zachary Taylor Park. After this we'll continue the long climb to Marymount University, where we'll be treated to a fabulous downhill all the way to the canal. To hit 14, continue through Georgetown and return via the Memorial Bridge back to the park.

Want Something Shorter? For 12 miles, return over the Key Bridge instead of the Memorial Bridge. If you want even less mileage, continue straight on Military Road instead of going into Zachary Taylor Park continue up Military and make a right onto Old Glebe Road to head straight to the canal and follow the Chain Bridge Loop Route. This will get you 10 miles instead of 14 and a little less elevation gain!

Need a Longer Route? Continuing down to the 14th street bridge will get you an extra two miles for 16 if you come up via the cemetery. Continuing up through Rosslyn will get you an additional extra mile to make it 17. For more mileage than that, add an out and back going north on the canal for any number of miles.

Thirsty? Thanks to Kate Scott for post-run drinks and picking the route this week. Want less hills and more fluids in the future? Volunteer for drinks and choose where we'll head that week! There's a water fountain at the entrance of Zachary Taylor Park at mile 3.6 and another at the top of the hill at mile 4.6. Fort Ethan Allen Park (mile 6.6) also has a water fountain, though it's sometimes turned off and a bit off the beaten path. Fletcher's should be turned on, but that's been hit or miss for me this season. There are also a few fountains by Lincoln for your return trip!

Need a Bathroom? The bathrooms at Fletcher's Cove have been very dependable lately, so those are a good bet for tomorrow morning!

Back by popular demand, we've got singlets for sale until July 16th! Get yours here and reach out to Steve with any questions! The next club race is the Age-Graded Four Miler on July 4th. Come race, or better yet volunteer and start scrounging around your apartments for whatever swanky stuff you don't need anymore for the prize pool.

Happy Running!

Anna

SLR: 14 Miles Capital Crescent

Hello Saturday Long Runners!

It is once again Nate, your faithful ersatz SLR leader, as Anna is off on her annual trip to Duluth! I'm excited to be back, and be sure to give a special welcome to our marathon trainees as this is the first SLR of their program!

Where Are We Going This Time? This week we'll be doing a classic out and back on the Capital Crescent trail (strava , gps , pdf), which if you read the cue sheets closely you'll notice has been part of our repertoire since back when the Capital Crescent wasn't even fully paved. Admittedly neither of us are fans of out-and-backs, but as Anna likes to say, since this is all uphill outward that makes it a loop, those are the rules! The recommended mileage for the week is 14, which puts our turnaround at the bridge over River Road, or really just when your watch says 7 miles.

Need Less or More? Math was my worst subject in college (and despite my degrees being CS and German I had to take a lot!) but even I can figure out that you can simply divide your preferred distance by 2 and turn around at that watch beep. If you prefer to go analog, the half mile markers on the trail roughly correspond to even miles -- trail mile 9.5 is roughly 2 miles from our start, 8.5 is 3 miles, 7.5 is 4 miles, and so forth. And if you're a Metro fan, the Bethesda end of the trail (8 miles) is right by that Red Line stop!

Parched? Habemus Potum! We have mid-run drinks today! Alan will be set up at the trail turn off for Battery Kemble, which is in a clearing off the right-hand side of the trail just before 5 miles. Just look for a Kiwi in a chair, he will be hard to miss. Water fountains are at Fletcher's Cove (3.5 miles), immediately over the Maryland border (5 miles, right after Alan) and, if you are going longer, at the Bethesda end of the trail. Please also thank Kate for bringing post-run drinks, and this is a reminder to start signing up yourselves! The club reimburses you, and doing it for 2 weeks gets you Bunion Derby volunteer credit!

Swimming Eyeballs? Fletcher's is your best bet for restrooms around mile 3.5. If you are going longer, Strava's route builder (which has actually not done me dirty yet) has a portapotty marked in the parking lot of the Bethesda public pool, immediately after the level crossing of Little Falls Parkway at about 7-2/3 miles.

The next Bunion Derby race is a 4-miler from Fletcher's (note the location change!!!) on Sunday! Volunteers are always needed, sign up here.

Happy Running!

Nate

SLR: 12 Miles Custis-W&OD

Hello Saturday Long Runners!

Sorry about the last minute route change, after reviewing the Army's 250th Road Closure Route, I believe Custis-W&OD is (quite literally) our only option for tomorrow morning. I'll still be standing on the rock at 7 AM, but please note that traffic into and out of and all around DC this weekend will be a nightmare, so plan your long runs accordingly (if you're staying home tomorrow, enjoy the morning!). If you need route recommendations for where you're at, feel free to drop me an e-mail (though I'm sure you know your neighborhood better than I do). Now let's get into it:

The Route: We're heading out to Falls Church and back again for a classic Custis - W&OD (strava, gpx, pdf) run! We'll head down Lynn and up Custis (which thus far seems like it should be okay for closures, if not we'll go up Wilson and cut over to Custis in Courthouse). We'll hit the Custis hills before heading down the W&OD just into Falls Church before turning around and doing the whole thing over again.

Want Something Shorter or Longer? Well you're in luck, out and backs make that super easy. Just head out however long you'd like, make a U-Turn, and come straight back. For a little bit of novelty on the way back, make a bird loop out of Bluemont, which will get you roughly the same amount of miles, but will spare you from a pure out and back route.

Thirsty? This route is plentiful for water, including fountains along Custis, at the corner of Custis and the W&OD, and just past the five mile mark of the W&OD.

Need a Bathroom? Similarly, there are plenty along the way. The W&L ones at the track should be open for the summer in the morning, but those are the only ones I'd call a bit of a gamble tomorrow, otherwise the portopotty at the soccer fields just past mile 5 of the W&OD will definitely be there!

The next club Happy Hour is June 19th at 6 PM at Four Courts! We'll be handing out snowball series awards, come out and congratulate our winners! Back by popular demand: the New Balance store is once again open for business! Look fast all fall and contact Steve Klug with questions!

Happy Running!

Anna
