Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Apr 19 - Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, April 19th, we will be running the Ross Drive route. Its listed at 14 miles but easily shortened if you prefer a bit less. If you want 11 miles you can run past Pierce Mill, across the pedestrian path, and then turn around once you hit the gate to Beach Drive. Working water fountains at Pierce Mill if you need it!

Word has it there is a small marathon going on in New England on Monday... that would be BOSTON, so good luck to all our club members running!  You can use the BAA Athlete Alert system to follow friends and family running.

Thank you to Lindsey Paola for post-run beverages! As always, we seek volunteers for post-run beverages for the coming months - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Run Strong!

SLR Apr 12 - Pentagon Army/Navy Dr

This Saturday, April 5th we are running the Pentagon Army/ Navy Drive Route, for 12 mostly flat miles.  This should make for a nice easy training run if you are running a marathon soon. I'll be out but have a sub starting things off.

Thank You to Paul & Christine Westcott for more fine post-run drink work! We do need drink volunteers soon! Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out! Also, I will be out a bunch of Saturdays in the next few months. If you would like to guest-lead SLR in the meantime email me; you just have to print route maps, be on time, and have a tad bit of public speaking skills!

Enjoy this great running weather!

SLR Apr 5 - ARL Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, April 5th we are running the Arlington Triangle for 16 miles, in the typical clock-wise direction.

If you are running Boston this year (which is in 2 weeks!), please email me to get on the DCRRC Boston Team and ensure you recieve social event updates. Lets represent our club at Boston!

Its important to stay hyrdrated on these longer runs, even in the cool weather, which may mean carrying it with you.   There should be multiple water fountains along this route, as well as indoor bathrooms and water by the tennis courts in bluemont park (left side of trail).

Try to enjoy this cool weather while it lasts - before you know it it will be 90 and humid out! Happy Running!

-- Erik
