Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

To receive weekly SLR updates via email, please log in and check your email subscriptions.

SLR - 14 Miles - Catholic MBT

Hey everyone!

Summertime is upon us and with it brings us our first SLR of the year at our new 7 AM start time. Even with the early start, it still looks like we may get some rain, which will provide a nice reprieve from the warm temps. For folks travelling from Crystal City or Alexandria, note that there's a 5K happening at 7 tomorrow that will close portions of 110, Columbia Pike, and Washington Boulevard so plan ahead for getting to the park at North Meade Street. Now let's get into it!

The Route: This week we'll be running Catholic MBT (strava, milermeter, pdf, gpx), a 14ish Mile loop that takes you up the Metropolitan Branch Trail, across the city via Columbia Rd. NW, and down the Rock Creek Trail. Be sure to check out the murals and metro stops along the MBT and the largest Catholic church building in North America at the Basilica!

Want Something Shorter? The MBT makes for an easy out and back from 10 to 12 miles depending on where you turn around. Alternatively, looping the Capitol instead of going towards Union Station will give you a nice 9 mile route.

Need a Longer Route? For some extra hills and another big church, combine this route with Cathedral Clintons for a nearly exactly 18 miler (continue straight on Calvert Street and pick up Cathedral Clintons from there). If you've had enough hills for one day, going north on the Rock Creek Trail instead of south gives you an easy way to add any number of miles.

Thirsty? Rejoice! The water fountains on The Mall are working and give plentiful water opportunities in the first four miles. On the MBT there are also fountains at the Eckington Dog Park at mile 5.8 and at mile 6.5 near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station. For a stronger drink (or a great Sunday afternoon activity), check out the plethora of breweries along the appropriately nicknamed Metropolitan Beer Trail. Unfortunately after the MBT fountains are few and far between, so bring water. Thank you to Christie for providing Post Run Drinks for the finish!

Need a Bathroom? The bathrooms at the Washington Monument are open (however the men's room has no doors on the stalls). Union Station also has restrooms located in the back by the main train hall/waiting area. There's also a Starbucks on the corner of Monroe and Michigan at mile 7.5 that I've used in a pinch.

The next club race is the Women's Distance Festival and Run After the Women 5K on Sunday June 4th! It's also a great time to start reading "For the Glory: The Untold and Inspiring Story of Eric Liddell, Hero of Chariots of Fire" by Duncan Hamilton for the next book club meeting on June 25th!

Happy Running!

SLR New Start Time 7 AM

Hey folks!

Summer has begun to rear its humid and sunny head in the mornings and as such SLR will be starting at 7 AM this week and going forward. Figured I'd give a quick heads up before our regularly scheduled Friday e-mail to allow for people to plan ahead.

Have a great week and see you bright and early on Saturday morning!

SLR - 12 Miles - Pentagon Army-Navy

Hey everyone!

If you weren't here last week, my name is Anna and I'm super excited to be taking over SLR from Megan (don't worry, she'll still be around for long runs and club events). I've got a lot of ideas for SLR, but most of those changes will trickle in slowly over time (with some buy in and approval from everyone). The first one that's most immediate is switching most of our rotes from Milermeter to Strava, which we've already started doing for MCR and some of our other club runs. For now I'll still list both, but look forward to that in the future and give your opinions on it! Always feel free to email me with any suggestions at annastaats@dcroadrunners.org.

Now for the nitty-gritty:

The Route: This week we'll be doing Pentagon Army Navy (strava, milermeter, pdf, gps) a 12 mile route that circumnavigates the Pentagon and National Landing via Army Navy Drive before heading back up the Four Mile Run and Mount Vernon Trails. There's a slight change in the route from how it's been run in the past. Instead of running across Glebe Rd., run down to South Meade Street and cross at the light. Glebe has become a faster and more well-travelled road in recent years, and it's not safe to cross without a traffic light (which is always a good rule of thumb anyway).
Want Something Shorter? For a little over 11, come back through the cemetery instead of going all the way up to Rosslyn. If you want to cut off more, coming back by going up South Eads Street off the four mile run and retracing your steps on the 27 Trail will get you about 10.5 miles!
Need a Longer Route? To add another mile, take a trek over a bridge into DC and back over one of the further ones (they'll all run you about the same distance). For even more, add a lap around Hains.
Thirsty? We don't have anyone currently slated for post-run drinks (please reach out to me if you're interested. We're always in need of volunteers and those become even more important in the summer!). There is, however, a water fountain on the Mount Vernon trail just past the metro bridge a little before mile 7. The Rosslyn Compass has also extended their $10 off Spring Drinks deal to May 14th with the code RSLYNSPRING!
Need a bathroom? There are portopotties at Gravelly Point at mile 8 and last I saw there was one on Army Navy Drive around the 4 mile mark.

The next club race is the Women's Distance Festival and Run After the Women 5K on Sunday June 4th! It's also a great time to start reading the "For the Glory: The Untold and Inspiring Story of Eric Liddell, Hero of Chariots of Fire" by Duncan Hamilton for the next book club on June 25th!

Let me know if you liked this e-mail format, think it's too wordy, or have any route recommendations or ways to make SLR better!

Happy Running!
Anna
