President's Blog -- Week of July 16, 2006

Club Members --
First, I have heard that many of you have not been receiving the Club emails. I made a fix that I hope will remedy this and I'll check with some of you at this week's workout and race to see if things are working better. Just so you know, the content of the emails is largely replicated in these Blog updates.
Second, it is a pleasure to report that all three of our major summer programs -- Bunion Derby, Marathon Training, and 10-Mile Training -- are now underway. The 10-Mile Program commenced in the sultry weather on Saturday morning under the tutelage of Kristin Blanchat and her fine group of "sub-coaches." Thanks to all the volunteers who are supporting these programs.
Third, thanks to first-time race director Mike Fox-Boyd for doing such a fine job at Friday night's Bastille Day 4-Miler on the Capital Crescent Trail. Kudos also to the large number of volunteers who supported this event. The new course configuration -- one mile west, two miles east, then one mile west back to the start -- seemed to work well and allowed for much easier set-up of the water stop. Look for this set-up at future races along the trail and towpath.
Fourth, we need volunteers for the Belle Haven 8K this Thursday evening at 7:00 pm. Scott Boggess is the race director. Contact Scott or the Club President if you can volunteer.
Fifth, please watch out for the weather this week. Monday and Tuesday are forecast to have highs of 99F. Wednesday (track) and Thursday (race) are forecast in the high 80s, but with high humidity. You can expect that we will adjust the track workout in light of the conditions.
Sixth, our next club race after Belle Haven is the Mile/3K Track Championships, on Wednesday July 26 at 7:00 pm, Washington-Lee HS. Volunteers will be needed to this event as well.
Seventh, our Club Picnic and 3-Mile race will take place Sunday August 13th at the Landon school in Bethesda, MD. Thanks to Rob and Judy Wolfe for directing, and to the good folks at Landon, including track coach Addison Hunt, for hosting us.
Finally, due to weather-based cancellation of the Landon X-C race on June 27th (Bunion #2), scoring for the Bunion Derby will count a maximum of four races, as opposed to five. so, your best four performances in the series will be the basis for your final score.
See you on the roads, at the track, and at Thursday's race.
