Victory in National Marathon; Wed. Night Update

Club Members and Guests:

At the suggestion of some Club Members, you will henceforth be able to post replies to this blog. See button below.

1. Wednesday Night on the Trail: Tonight's (3/28) workout, as previously announced, will be on the Custis and W&OD Trails. Thr workout is "3 on/2 off." Pace is determined by whether or not you are running Cherry Blossom this Sunday. Sundown is at 7:28 -- so, you can plan to start earlier than usual. I will start sending grouups out at about 7:00 -- you can do your warm-up on the trail.

2. Congrats to DCRRC National Marathon Teams! DCRRC swept both first place team awards at last Saturday's Wirefly National Marathon. Congrats to the following competitors!

Women: Robin Martz, Toni Diegoli, and Janet Braunstein.
Men: Kenny Ames, Kenneth Kent, Andrew Feng, Chuck (Charles) Walters, David Heinen
Looking ahead to 2008, let's plan on a repeat!

3. More Wirefly National Marathon: Congrats to all our other finishers in the half-marathon and marathon. Toni Diegoli finished as 7th woman overall, leading the Club's showing. Club members also served in a number of critical volunteer positions: George Banker was director of volunteers, ably assisted by Jay Wind. Ted Cochrane managed the baggage check operation. Other club members served as course marshalls and at aid stations.

4. 2006 Award Winners: Congratulations to the following winners of our annual awards, featured at the Club Banquet on Sunday, March 25th.

Hall of Fame: George Banker
Volunteer of the Year: William S. Bondurant
Outstanding Male: Robert C. Wolfe

In lieu of a Newsletter Editor, Bill Bondurant, our website manager, will also serve on the Board.

6. Cherry Blossom 10-Mile: This race still needs volunteers, and you can sign up at www.cherryblossom.org Remember that volunteering this year gets you a guaranteed entry into the 2008 race! Your club president is heading up a "video security" team -- I need a few more volunteers to fill out the team. Contact me if you are interested.

7. 10K Training Program: Our "goal" race for the 10K training program is the Capitol Hill 10K in May -- so there is still plenty of time to get in shape. More information is available under the "Programs" button to your left. Please contact program coordinator Peter Lamberton if you are interested in joining the group as a coach or as a runner. plamberton@yahoo.com

Run well in this great weather!

Track Workout Cancelled; Meeting March 12

Club Members and Guests:

1. TRACK WORKOUT CANCELLED: There is a scheduled lacrosse game tomorrow evening, March 7, at Washington-Lee HS. There also is snow predicted. Due to these conditions, there will be no track workout. The good news is that we will have access to the track on March 14 and 21. The track will be closed to us on March 28, but due to the early arrival of Daylight Savings Time, we will be able to use the trail that evening. Thanks, ERG

2. BOARD MEETING MARCH 12 at 7:00 pm.

The semi-monthly meeting of the DCRRC Board will take place Monday, March 12, at the Silver Diner in Clarendon.

Agenda items will include a preview of the Club's Annual Meeting and Banquet (see details below), with a finalization of the slate of candidates for the 2007-2008 Board. The slate will be posted here immediately after the meeting.

We also will have a discussion of the proposed budget for 2007-2008. All are welcome, but if you plan to come and are not a regular attendee, please send an email so we know to expect you.

3. 12K at Burke Lake: Sunday March 11: The penultimate Snowball Series race will be held Sunday, March 11, at Burke Lake Park. See Race Schedule for details. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! Please contact race director George Getek if you can help. ggetek@aol.com

4. Banquet and Elections: Our Club's annual meeting and banquet will take place on Sunday, March 25th, at the Clarendon Grill in Arlington, starting at 4:00 pm. As promised, we have a very exciting speaker: Chris Lear, author of "Running With the Buffaloes" and "Sub 4:00: Alan Webb and the Quest for the Fastest Mile." Chris is a native of New Jersey, and ran at both The Pingry School and Princeton University, where he was a teammate of All-American Scott Anderson, a regular participant in the Club's Wednesday night workouts.

Thanks to Lana Leung for securing our reservation at the Clarendon Grill. And thanks to the others who have stepped forward to volunteer.

But more volunteers are still needed. Please contact president@dcroadrunners.org if you can help.

5. Annual Awards: In order to make this as transparent a process as possible, please submit nominations no later than March 10th for annual awards in the following categories: Outstanding Runners (both male and female categories); Most Improved Runners (M and F); Outstanding Masters Runner (M and F); Volunteer of the Year (just one).

Please, do not hesitate to nominate yourself! It is a difficult task to sift through the accomplishments of our hundreds of active members to make these selections.

Nominations can be sent to the "president" email address posted above.

6. Annual Election: A proposed slate of candidates for the various Club offices and the Board will be posted here no later than March 11th. If you would like to be considered, or know of someone who would serve well in one of these capacities, please let us know.

7. 10K Training Program: Over 40 runners showed up on Saturday for the start of the 2007 10K program. Congrats to all of you for braving the chilly weather. Although bad weather might be in the forecast this weekend, eventually things will get nicer -- and the program is still open for new participants! Our "goal" race is the Capitol Hill 10K in May -- so there is still plenty of time to get in shape. Please contact program coordinator Peter Lamberton if you are interested in joining the group as a coach or as a runner. plamberton@yahoo.com

8. 25K Race: Congrats also to the more than 100 runners who braved truly difficult conditions at last Saturday's Belle Haven 25K. And thanks to the numerous volunteers who made this race possible, particularly race director John Haubert. Full results are now posted.

Our next race is the Burke Lake 12K on Sunday, March 11th, directed by Club Treasurer George Getek.

9. New Club Benefit: RacePacket. By now, some of you may have received in the mail a copy of the latest RacePacket. This is a new benefit for Club Members. RacePacket will now include a two-page Club Newsletter (look for it just before the results pages toward the back of the magazine).

Look for RacePacket in your mailbox six times a year.

10. Club Challenge 10-Miler: As we all know, this event was cancelled due to snow. The Board will consider several options to make this race more attractive to DCRRC participantsin future years, including avoiding a scheduling conflict with one of our own races that weekend, and perhaps allowing participants to score Snowball Series points.

11. Henry Heymann, RIP: Several Club members have written to note the passing, on February 8, of longtme DCRRC member Henry Heymann. Henry, a graduate of Princeton University, World War II veteran, and career Foreign Service Officer in the State Department, started running at age 50, and continued well into his 80s. Searching the web, I found several letters of Henry to the alumni magazine of his beloved alma mater. Henry was a man of great intelligence and commitment both in service to his country and to his many interests, such as conservation.
