Bunion Derby to Start; Members Meeting June 21

DCRRC Members and Guests:

The Bunion Derby commences with the Hugh Jascourt 4-Miler on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Fletcher's Boat House. The event will be run on the C&O Canal Towpath.

Remember that there is NO entry fee for Club Members to these races -- entry fee remains $5.00 for non-Club Members. Until July 1, non-Club Members can join the Club for the low fee of $12.00/year. Dues raise to $20/year after July 1.

Weather looks hot, but otherwise good for Wednesday's race. Note Club policy that in the presence of thunder and lightning, we will postpone or cancel the start of these summertime races.

The second Bunion Derby race is next Tuesday, June 27th, at the Landon School in Bethesda. This is a 3-Mile cross-country event.

After the race on June 21, we will hold a brief all-Members meeting to discuss and vote on proposals to spend in excess of $1000.00 on timing equipment for our races.

Finally (for now), we are looking for a Race Director(s) for the ever-popular Bastille Day 4-Miler on Friday July 14th. This is a perfect opportunity for those racing the Rockville Twi-Lighter on July 15th to take a night off and volunteer. The race is run from Fletcher's Boathouse, in and back on the Capital Crescent Trail. Please contact me if you can help out in any capacity.

Run well, and remember to hydrate frequently, and with adequate sodium, during this weather.

Weekend Blog Update

Club Members:

The Memorial Day weekend brings the first 7:00 am start for SLR, and a weekend closer to the start of summer racing season. Please don't forget the following as you relax this weekend!

1. SLR will start at 7:00 am from Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. See SLR page for details.

2. Check out the new information on the Track Workouts page. Workouts for June through September will be posted over the weekend.

3. Remember our Women's Distance Festival on Sunday June 4th. Volunteers are needed, as well as runners! This is a fun event, and includes a male-only "Run After the Women" 5K starting at 9:15. So, please race, then volunteer, or volunteer, then race!

4. Remember Lawyers Have Heart 10K on Saturday June 10. Volunteers from the Club are needed for some critical race support -- and Club Members can get a $2.00 discount on entry fee in return. If you are going to take advantage of the discount, please bring a friend to volunteer. And please let us know in advance who will be coming.

5. Bunion Derby starts on June 21. There will likely be some changes to the scoring system this year that will reflect volunteer activity as well as racing results. If you are running the series, we really need you to take at least race "off" and volunteer with directing the race, timing, finish line, water stops, or course marshalling. There are 8 races to manage here, and everybody wants to participate in the competition. Don't assume other people will give up their opportunity to compete so that you are able to. Step forward and volunteer to keep this great Summer Series going.

Have a great running weekend!

Ed

Weekend Update

Club Members:

The Spring/Summer Racing Season is getting into full swing. Good luck to all as you prepare and race. A few notable items to keep in mind:

1. We are now "back on the track" at Washington-Lee for Wednesday Night Track Workouts. The Track Workouts page has been fully re-vamped with new postings and information. Please check it out. Workouts for the remainder of May are posted; workouts for June through September have been drafted, and are being reviewed by our Marathon Training Program coach and incoming SLR director, as we endeavor to coordinate our overall training efforts. They will be posted by next week.

2. SLR regulars have one more week to "sleep in" before we inaugurate the 7:00 am start time on Saturday May 27. Non-regulars who want to get started on a new long run training cycle should know that now is the perfect time, before the truly beastly weather is upon us. Runs average about 12-14 miles over the next couple of weeks, then go back to 10 Miles on June 10 for start of the Marathon Training Program. So, nothing too long for a while -- a good chance to get in and start out gradually.

3. The Bunion Derby starts in one month, on June 21st. Remember that this series is made posible only by the efforts of those who volunteer to direct and support these races. If you are competing this year, please schedule one race in the series as a "night off" from competition, and instead volunteer to assist the race director. We have many needs: timers, scorers, water stop managers, and even bikers to lead out the pack, as well as to keep track of the "trail pack" so we know when all runners have finished. I will have more to say on this as the races approach. Please, don't wait to be asked to volunteer -- let us know up front which race(s) you can work, and what you would like to do.

4. DCRRC Racing Teams: Teams are now forming for races from Rockville Twilight through Marine Corps Marathon, under the direction of Aaron Cheksis. A new page will appear on the website shortly with details.

5. Weekend Events: Saturday: Triple Crown races, 8:30, Fort Hunt Park. Sunday: Mark's Azalea Run 5K, 8:00 am, Landon School, Bethesda.

As always, click on Archive below for recent postings.

Run well,

Ed
