Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR December 5 - UPDATE

Saturday Runners,

Please note that for this week's Klingle - Cortland route (additional map here), the sidewalk on the north (left, crossing VA to DC) side of Memorial Bridge will most likely be closed and barricaded. Please obey any signage that you encounter over the next few weeks until the sidewalk is re-opened. An alternate way to get from Memorial Bridge to Rock Creek Park Trail is to cross on the south (right, going VA to DC) side of the bridge, and immediately after crossing, loop down to the right to get on the sidewalk/path that leads under Memorial Bridge and past the volleyball courts.

Happy running,

-Mike

SLR December 5 - Klingle - Cortland

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route for Saturday, December 5, will be Klingle - Cortland (additional map here), a 13.5 mi lollipop-style route that we haven't done in a while. To shorten the route to anything less than 12 miles, I would suggest simply running out and back on the Rock Creek Park Trail. You can add distance in a number of different places, either on Rock Creek, the Mall, or Ohio Drive, among others.

The club is looking for your feedback, so if you haven't done so already, please take our membership survey! A link to the survey is also currently posted at the top of the club website's homepage. There are a few questions that specifically relate to SLR, so let us know what you'd like to see at our group run in the future.

Thank you Dan Lesmez for post-run beverages! We will need volunteers for January and beyond, and I'm planning to post a schedule soon covering the next few months. Up-to-date future volunteer needs as well as a route schedule are always available on our web page, and you can email me to schedule your slot. Any time you can cover at least 2 consecutive weeks is helpful, and if you can do 4 weeks (or more!) that's ideal. Volunteering is easy, and all of your expenses for supplies are reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR November 28 - Fort Scott Hill

Happy Thanksgiving, Saturday Runners!

If you're looking for some more running on your holiday weekend, beyond the turkey trot races I'm sure you're all doing, we have the 11 mile Fort Scott Hill (additional map here) route on the schedule for Saturday, November 28. You can shorten the route slightly to about 10 miles by returning past the Pentagon, via Fort Scott Dr., 23rd St, and Army-Navy Dr. If you'd like a longer run, the Mt. Vernon Trail can add as much distance as you'd like on the return leg.

The club is looking for your feedback, so if you haven't done so already, please take our membership survey! A link to the survey is also currently posted at the top of the club website's homepage. There are a few questions that specifically relate to SLR, so let us know what you'd like to see for our group run in the future.

Thank you Joe Buccino for post-run beverages over the last month! We are now in need of another volunteer for the month of December, so until the next volunteer steps up we will not have post-run beverages provided after this week. Up-to-date future volunteer needs as well as a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me to schedule your slot. Any time you can cover at least 2 consecutive weeks is helpful, and if you can do 4 weeks (or more!) that's ideal. Volunteering is easy, and all of your expenses for supplies are reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike
