Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Nov 30 - Pentagon Army/Navy Drive

Happy Thanksgiving Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Nov 30th, we will be running the Pentagon Army/ Navy Drive Route, listed at 12 miles.  I am out of town but have a sub to start things off.

Thank you to Rich Mendelowitz for our post run drinks!  We can always use more volunteers; its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Lots of fun club events coming up, from all the great snowball series races to our holiday happy hours.  The Holiday Track relay and Happy Hour are coming up Wed, Dec 18.  We are also having a big brunch immediately following SLR on Dec 21st at 4 Courts Pub in Arlington, to recap your races and catch up with fellow SLR regulars!  Stay tuned for details.

The weather looks cool but not freezing for Saturday morning, so dress accordingly!

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving, filled with either a turkey trot or some healthy "recovery" on the couch from your fall races!

SLR Nov 23 - Glover Panda Route

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Nov. 23rd we will be running the Glover Panda Route, distance of about 13 miles.  I will be out racing but Alison will be getting things started!

Thank you to Paul and Christine Westcott for post-run drink work! We could always use additional drink volunteers - this is also a great way to fulfill any snowball series volunteer requirements. Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses. Check the SLR Webpage for dates of need - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

The weather looks nice for Saturday, but rain is predicted Friday night.  If the rain is heavy enough the trail portion through Glover Park may be muddy, so if you are worried about getting your shoes dirty you can just run an out and back on the Capital Crescent trail.

Happy Running!

SLR Nov 16 - DC Sightseer Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Nov. 16th we will be running the DC Sightseer loop for a little over a 13 mile run.  Shorter options available too!

Thank you to Paul and Christine Westcott for post-run drink work!  We however do still need someone for Nov30 as they will be out of town in case anyone can help us out!  We could always use additional drink volunteers - this is also a great way to fulfill any snowball series volunteer requirements. Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses. Check the SLR Webpage for dates of need - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Approx. Mileage Options

  • 9: After Lincoln Memorial, come directly back via Memorial Bridge
  • 12: Do route as written but skip the loop around the Tidal Basin, so take the little Inlet bridge on Ohio drive, then take stairs up to 14th
  • 13.5: Do as written in cue sheet, come back via Memorial Bridge
  • 16.5: Add a loop around Hains Point to add 3 miles before coming back via 14th street bridge

This is a great route for anyone new to the area, visitors, or just those trying to get reacquainted with the sights, sounds, and smells of DC. Enjoy!
