Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR May 10 - Glover to Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, May 10th, we will be running the Glover to Rock Creek via Tilden route, listed at 14 miles.

New routes have been posted through the end of June.  We will be sticking with the 11-16 mile range for now, before we start focusing back on Marathon training and add in a few extra long runs.

Thank you to Lindsey Paola for post-run beverages! As always, we seek volunteers for post-run beverages for the coming months - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out. And don't forget, we will be starting up mid-run beverages in June for those hot summer days, so please start figuring out which Saturday you can volunteer!

Hope you are ready some more great running weather this weekend!

-- Erik

SLR May 3 - MaryMount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, May 3rd, we will be running the MaryMount/ Chain Bridge route. Its listed at 14 miles but easily shortened if you prefer a bit less. If you only want 12 miles you can come back via the Key Bridge (don't run through Georgetown).  For the full 14, go through Georgetown and come back via Memorial Bridge.

Please be advised the Capital Crescent trail (the paved one) is closed between Fletchers Boathouse and Georgetown, so while this shouldn't affect us, use caution and stay on the Canal Towpath. Speaking of, Water/restrooms at Fletchers if you need them.

New routes will be posted soon to get us through May.  For now, we will be holding steady with maintenance runs between 10 and 16 miles - later in summer we will get back up doing the extra long runs in prep for fall marathons.  We may even have an exciting new route in June...  Remember, the SLR virtual mailbox is always open (as in, email), so feel free to send along questions, comments, or [constructive] critisism!

Hope you are drying out for some great running weather this weekend!

SLR Apr 19 - Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, April 19th, we will be running the Ross Drive route. Its listed at 14 miles but easily shortened if you prefer a bit less. If you want 11 miles you can run past Pierce Mill, across the pedestrian path, and then turn around once you hit the gate to Beach Drive. Working water fountains at Pierce Mill if you need it!

Word has it there is a small marathon going on in New England on Monday... that would be BOSTON, so good luck to all our club members running!  You can use the BAA Athlete Alert system to follow friends and family running.

Thank you to Lindsey Paola for post-run beverages! As always, we seek volunteers for post-run beverages for the coming months - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Run Strong!

-- Erik
