Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

Hello Saturday Runners!
On Saturday this week, September 10, our route will be a fall race preview on the Mock Marine Corps Marathon route (additional map here). The planned distance is 16 miles, but if you'd like some extra mileage while also getting an even better preview of the race route, there are a few out-and-back sections on Lee Hwy and Rock Creek, which you can add on to make it 20 miles (see alternate map). Or for 18 miles, if you only do the Lee Hwy section (which I'd suggest between the two), you'll get to run up the largest hill anywhere on the race route. For a shorter run, you can skip the Mall segment for 10.5 miles, or add only a portion of it for anything in between. This year's race route is slightly modified from last year due to Metro's SafeTrack, but our mock route still covers the meat of it.
After some relief last week, we're going to be back to high temperatures and steamy humidity this weekend, so don't forget all of the precautions you've been taking this summer! We will have mid-run drinks provided this week, but it's a good idea to also carry your own fluids for long runs in this kind of weather. Mid-run drinks will be located on the northeast side of the Tidal Basin, near the intersection of Maine Ave & Wallenberg Pl and the paddle boat parking area, accessible twice at about 7.5 and 12.5 miles into the 16 mile route.
Thanks this week go to Jennifer Vu for post-run drinks, and Katie Morgan for mid-run drinks! All of our volunteer needs through the Marine Corp Marathon are now filled, so a big thank you to everyone who has helped out! For the future, up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Our drinks are entirely volunteer provided, so if you're an SLR regular, please do your part to help support them!
Happy running!

Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's run, on September 3, will be the 13.5 mile Southeast DC (additional map here) route. If you'd like a shorter run while going along the same route, you can go out & back on the Mall to get up to 8 miles if you run to the Capitol and back. Another way to shorten the run is to bring your SmarTrip card, and take the Metro back to the start in Rosslyn. If you get on at Eastern Market this is about 9 miles, or Smithsonian is about 10.5 miles. For an extended route, you can continue on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail up to cross the river at Benning Rd. and take Maryland Ave. back to the Capitol, which would get you about 16.5 miles.
We're luckily forecasted to get some relief from the heat this Saturday, with temperature in the high 60s at the start of the run. It's looking like there will be some rain around midday, but hopefully it will hold off long enough for all of us to finish running! Mid-run drinks this week will be located on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, near the rec center that's about 7 miles from the start.
Thank you Jennifer Vu for post-run drinks, and Yuko Takakusaki for mid-run drinks! All of our volunteer needs through the Marine Corp Marathon are now filled, so a big thank you to everyone who has helped out! For the future, up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Hello Saturday Runners!
This week, on August 27, we will be running out & back on the Custis to W&OD route (additional map here), for a planned distance of 18 miles. Because this route is out & back, it's easy to go as long or as short as you'd like to fit your individual schedule. If you're going 18 miles, the turnaround point will be roughly on Virgina Lane (before reaching I-66), or you can adjust accordingly for other distances. Once you're on the W&OD trail, approximate mileage from the starting point will be offset by 1, so 6 miles out will be at mile marker 5, 9 miles out will be at mile marker 8, and everything in between. This route has a fair amount of rolling hills, but it's great preparation for facing hills in any of your upcoming races!
Forecasted temperatures this Saturday morning are similar to the heat that we've been used to recently, but fortunately the dew point should be down, so the expected relative humidity is no higher than about 80%. While that's still pretty high, it should feel a lot different than starting your run with 90+% humidity! Mid-run drinks this week will be located on Roosevelt St, just before Benjamin Banneker Park on the W&OD trail. This is about 6 miles from the start, so if you're going 18 miles you can stop on both your way out and back, at miles 6 and 12 of your run.
Thank you Jonny Pellish for post-run drinks, and Flora Arabo for mid-run drinks!
