Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR October 1 - 8:00 am Start Time - Arlington Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

Don't forget that this Saturday we will be shifting our meeting time one hour back, to 8:00 am until next summer. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep, and the cooler weather coming this fall!

This week's run, on October 1, is Arlington Triangle (additional map here), a 16 mile loop around the major shared run/bike paths of Arlington. For a longer run, you can extend this route by adding out & back mileage on the W&OD trail before returning on Custis. To shorten it to less than 16 miles, you can either turn it into a direct out & back, or veer off onto our Four Mile Run Park route for 11 miles. The weather forecast is looking wet on Saturday morning, so make sure you have your DC Road Runners hat to keep the rain out of your eyes!

Thank you Jenn Barton for post-run drinks, and Eileen Basso for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located at the W&OD trailhead in Shirlington, just after the end of the Four Mile Run trail, at about 7 miles into the route. Though it seems too soon to be thinking about it, our Marathon Training Program for spring races (target to DC Rock n Roll) will begin on November 19, so I've planned a few routes to bridge the gap after MCM, which are now posted on our schedule and open for post-run volunteers.

Up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Our drinks are entirely volunteer provided, so if you're an SLR regular, please do your part to help support them!

Happy running!

Mike

SLR September 24 - Marymount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this weekend on September 24 will be Marymount Chain Bridge (additional map here), for just over 14 miles. To shorten this route to 12 miles, you can return via the Key Bridge rather than Memorial Bridge. To further shorten the route to 10 miles, take the Key Bridge return and also do not take a left off of Military Rd into Taylor Park, but continue straight to N Old Glebe Rd. If you'd rather lengthen the route beyond 14 miles, you can continue along the river to return via the 14th St. Bridge for 16.5 miles.

Before this Saturday's run, at 6:30 am on 9/24, Gavin Cribb from Fast Track Sports Medicine and Performance Center will be back to give a short free workshop on strength training for runners. We all love to run, but sometimes miss this important part of a wholistic training plan. Now that fall is officially here, we will be changing our meeting time next week on October 1, to 8:00 am. Enjoy the extra hour of Saturday sleep until next summer!

Thank you Jenn Barton for post-run drinks, and Kyle Edgerton for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located on North Old Glebe Rd, just to the west of Military Rd, at about mile 6.5 of the route. All of our volunteer needs through the Marine Corp Marathon are now filled, so a big thank you to everyone who has helped out! For the future, up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Our drinks are entirely volunteer provided, so if you're an SLR regular, please do your part to help support them!

Happy running!

SLR September 17 - C&O Canal Towpath

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week we have the first 20-miler of this training cycle for fall marathons on our schedule, an out & back route on the C&O Canal Towpath (additional map here)! If you'd like to run any other distance, it's very easy to modify this one by just turning around at half of your desired distance. In addition, once you get onto the Towpath, the marked mile posts will rougly correspond to your distance from our meeting point, so for example, you would turn around at mile marker 10 for a 20 mile run, mile marker 8 for a 16 mile run, etc.

Fortunately this Saturday's weather should be better than last week, with temperatures in the mid-60s at the start. High temps later in the day will get up to the 80s, but that's a 10 deg improvement from last Saturday! Mid-run drinks will be located at Lock 7 on the Towpath, which is roughly 7 miles out along this route. If you're running 20 miles, you will also pass this drink station again at mile 13 on your way back. In addition, there are water fountains (and bathrooms) at Fletcher's Boathouse, which you'll pass at miles 3 and 17 of a 20-miler.

Thank you Rachel Grocock for post-run drinks, and Ellie Evans for mid-run drinks!

Mike
