Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR November 5 - National Capitol

Hello Saturday Runners!

Congrats to all of our Marine Corps Marathon finishers, and good luck to everyone racing in NYC or elsewhere this weekend! For those of you who aren't either tapering or recovering, this week's long run on Saturday, November 5 will be National Capitol (additional map here) for 12 miles. To shorten the route, you can return directly over the Key Bridge after coming back to the Lincoln Memorial, which will be about 9.5 miles, or you can do any shorter out & back along the Mall. For a longer run, a full lap of Hains Point will add 4 miles to make it 16, or a lap of the Tidal Basin will add 1.75 miles to make it just under 14.

We now need a volunteer to start handling post-run drinks, since the schedule going forward is currently empty. Please thank Coach Big Guy for stepping up again this week to fill in the gap, but post-run drinks will not resume until volunteers start signing up. I've also now posted a complete schedule of our runs taking us into spring marathon season, going through both Rock n Roll DC and Boston.

Up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, please do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR October 29 - Water Route & MCM

Hello Saturday Runners!

If you've been training for the Marine Corps Marathon, you're ready to go - good luck! Don't forget that Metro will not be opening early due to SafeTrack, so take a look at the race's travel logistics info in advance. If your family or friends who aren't running MCM would like to help out with refreshments or directing runner traffic at the finish line, check out the club's volunteer page for more info on our partnering with Hope For Warriors and registration details.

For everyone else, this Saturday's run on October 29 we will be the 12 mile Water Route (additional map here). You can shorten this to 10.5 miles but cutting off the Tidal Basin loop, or to 8 miles by doing this in addition to cutting the Hains Point lap short across Buckeye Drive. For more than 12 miles, you can add distance on your way back along either the Mall or the Mt. Vernon Trail.

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but you're in good hands with Coach Big Guy, who will be starting off this Saturday's run. He's also bringing post-run drinks this week (with no one else having stepped up to volunteer!), so be sure to give him extra thanks for that.

We now need a volunteer to cover at least the next 2 weeks of post run drinks, to bridge the gap until the spring marathon training program (targeting Rock & Roll DC) gets going, so please let me know if you can help. Post-run drinks will not resume until we have more volunteers. Though there are only 2 more weeks now shown on our schedule, I will be posting a full list of routes and distances thru the Boston Marathon within the next week.

SLR October 22 - Chain Bridge Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, on October 22, we will be running the 10 mile Chain Bridge Loop (additional map here) to continue tapering for Marine Corps and other marathons happening next week. If you'd like to go longer than 10 miles, you can keep going past the Key Bridge and return over Memorial Bridge for 12 miles, or use our standard Marymount - Chain Bridge route for 14 miles. Thankfully this week's unseasonably hot weather is on its way out, and we should have a great morning for running tomorrow with temperatures starting around 50 degrees!

With the Marine Corps Marathon coming up, DCRRC will be partnering with Hope For Warriors, so if you or your family & friends would like to help out with refreshments or directing runner traffic at the finish line, check out the club's volunteer page for more info and registration details. Also, if you're looking for something a little bit different this Saturday morning, you can join local star ultrarunner Michael Wardian on a MCM training run starting from MedStar Health at Lafayette Center (more details on our club contingent and the run) at 8:00 am. (But for those not interested, don't worry - SLR will still go on as normal!)

Thank you Anita Hines for post-run drinks for the last two weeks! We will need a volunteer to cover 3 weeks of post-run drinks starting next week, to bridge the gap until the next marathon training program (targeting Rock & Roll DC) gets going, so please let me know now if you can help.

Mike
