Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
Happy Thanksgiving, and I hope you all had fun with your turkey trot races! To get out for some more mileage this weekend, we will be running the 11 mile Fort Scott Hill route (additional map here). This route is an out & back, so for a shorter distance you can turn around sooner, or for a longer run you can continue further down the Mt. Vernon Trail after running up and down the hill. The weather forecast is looking like we'll have a great fall morning in store, so I hope to see you there!
Don't forget that our Snowball Series of winter races (with free entry for club members!) will soon be getting underway. The first race of the series, the Gar Williams Half Marathon, is unfortunately already sold out, but there are plenty of other options between 8K and 20K over the next few months.
We now need a volunteer to start handling post-run drinks, to cover the gap over the next few weeks. With no volunteer, we will not have post-run drinks this week, and they will not resume until more volunteers start signing up. I've now posted a complete schedule of our runs through both Rock n Roll DC and Boston marathons. Volunteer needs to go with our route schedule are always kept up-to-date on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, please do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week, on November 19, we will be running out & back on the C&O Canal Towpath (additional map here). The suggested mileage for trainees beginning a marathon training plan is 10 miles, but you can easily make this route as long or as short as you like by selecting your turn-around point. Once you get on the C&O Towpath, the trail's mile post markers roughly correspond to your distance from the start, so the turn-around point for a 10 mile run is the 5 mile marker, or for a 14 mile run turn around at the 7 mile marker, etc.
This week will be the beginning of our next Marathon Training Program targeting the Rock n Roll DC Marathon in March, with the group again meeting concurrently with us as they did over the summer leading up to MCM. Trainees and coaches will again be gathering at our meeting point 15 minutes before we all start together at 8:00 am. It's looking like the winter training program group will be smaller than it was over the summer, but please make them feel welcome again starting this week!
If you're looking for an active start to Thanksgiving morning next week, the Alexandria Turkey Trot five-miler is a great event that's organized by our club. Whether you're looking for a fun run with the family (including strollers & dogs! with a separate start for these), or a flat and fast course to clock a PR, this is the race for you!

Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route takes us onto the trails in its first half, for a total of 13 miles along Glover - Tilden - Rock Creek (additional map here). For a shorter run that includes more trail miles, you can go out & back on the Glover Archbold Trail, retracing your path back to the start. If you'd like to add distance beyond 13 miles, continuing along the river to return via the 14th St bridge will add about 2.5 miles. Fall weather is definitely here, with forecast temperatures in the mid-30s on Saturday morning, so come prepared!
Even though fall racing season is still upon us, we're already within 18 weeks of spring races in March, so starting next week, November 19, the club's Marathon Training Program will once again be meeting concurrently with us for long runs. Please welcome the new crop of trainees next week, and encourage them to stick around for SLR after their target race!
We now need a volunteer to start handling post-run drinks, since the schedule currently has a gap of 3 weeks after this Saturday. Please thank Coach Big Guy for stepping up (a third time, now!) this week to fill in, but post-run drinks will not resume until more volunteers start signing up. He's going to be out of town next weekend, so the reprieve ends after this week!
I've now posted a complete schedule of our runs taking us into spring marathon season, going through both Rock n Roll DC and Boston. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, please do your part to keep it going!
