Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
Get ready for some amazing running weather this Saturday morning, compared to what we've been struggling through lately!! The forecast includes clear skies, temps in the low to mid 60s, and dew point in the mid 50s, so everyone should show up to enjoy what's shaping up to be a beautiful day! This week's route will be 13.5 miles to Southeast DC (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). If you'd like to shorten this route while also running with the group along the Anacostia River, a good way to do that is to carry your SmarTrip card and hop on the Metro back to Rosslyn, either at Eastern Market for about 9 miles, or at Smithsonian for about 11 miles. For a longer run of 16 miles, keep going along the river past Pennsylvania Ave and cross back at Benning Rd, then take Maryland Ave back down to Constitution Ave and the Mall.
Thank you Eunja Rau for post-run drinks, and Lindsey Wray for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be at about the 7 mile point, near the rec center that's adjacent to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Though our volunteer schedule had been filled up to MCM, I now need one person to fill in for post-run drinks on September 30 due to a change of plans, so please let me know if you can help out on that day.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route is an out & back along the Custis and W&OD trails (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). The recommended distance for those of you training along with our MTP for Marine Corps is 18 miles, but you can easily go any distance you like on this route. When you reach the W&OD trail at the Custis gazebo intersection, you'll be 5 miles out from the start, so go as much further as you like to get your target distance. For 18 miles, the turn around point is on Virginia Ln, just before crossing the I-66 overpass.
Thank you Eunja Rau for post-run drinks, and Kerstin Fagerstrom for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be at about the 6 mile point, at the end of N Roosevelt St, near the basketball court, just before the W&OD Trail goes through Benjamin Banneker Park. In addition, you'll pass at least 4 places along the trail where there should be working water fountains, but with the forecast calling for strong sun, warm temperatures, and high humidity, it's never a bad idea to carry some of your own fluids too.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
Our route this weekend, on Saturday August 12, will be the 15 mile loop through Long Bridge Park (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). If you'd like to run a similar but shorter loop, there are a few options to jump over to the Mt Vernon trail early. For about 8.5 miles, take a left off of Crystal Drive at the Crystal City Water Park trail, which brings you over to the Mt Vernon Trail at the airport. For 11 miles, take a right off of Potomac Ave at S Glebe Rd, cross to the far side of Rt 1 (Jefferson Davis Hwy), turn left, and then get on the Four Mile Run Trail back towards the bottom of the airport and Mt Vernon Trail.
The annual club picnic is also this Saturday evening (activities start at 5:30 pm) at the Landon School in Bethesda, MD, including a kids' race, cross country 3 mile race, plus Gaupos Mexican food and an ice cream truck for everyone! This is a really fun event, and is free for all club members if you register online in advance up through tomorrow (Friday) at 6:00 pm. If you'd like to attend the picnic but skip the race, you can do that as well, but please still register and select this option so that we can get an accurate headcount.
Thanks this week go to Jerry McEnerney for post-run drinks, and Matthew & Emily Chesnes for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located on Slaters Lane, between miles 7 and 8, on the left side of the road just before you get to a group of shops that includes Buzz Bakeshop.
I'd like to also send an extra special THANK YOU this week to everyone who has volunteered for SLR drinks this summer, or signed up to do so! We're now completely covered up through the Marine Corps Marathon in October! There will still be more opportunities to volunteer in the fall, and sometime within the next few weeks I'll be posting a route and distance schedule to bridge the gap from the summer Marathon Training Program to the winter Marathon Training Program.
Happy running!
Mike
