Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR July 8 - Pentagon Army Navy

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our Saturday morning route this week, on July 8, will be the 12 mile Pentagon - Army Navy loop (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). To shorten the route by 1 mile, you can return to Iwo Jima past Arlington Cemetery rather than going up to the Key Bridge. If you'd like to add distance, you can easily do so on either the Mt. Vernon or Custis trail, or Roosevelt Island if it is open (there have been some closures recently).

Thank you Christie Wetzel and Rodrigo Vellon for post-run drinks! Due to lack of a volunteer, we do not have mid-run drinks this week. There are a lot of upcoming openings in the schedule for mid-run drinks, so please take a look at what's needed and let me know when you can help out.

Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, while mid-run drinks can be booked on a week by week basis. SLR drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

SLR July 1 - Capital Crescent Trail

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run, on Saturday July 1, will be an out and back on the Capital Crescent Trail (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). The scheduled distance is 14 miles, which would mean a turn-around point at mile marker 4.5 near River Rd. Mid-run drinks this week will be at the CCT intersection with MacArthur Blvd, which you'll run into at about 5.25 miles and 8.25 miles (after the turn-around) if you're going 14 miles. If you'd like to go any other distance besides 14 miles, just turn around either earlier or later on the trail. There are also water fountains available at a few locations, at Fletchers just past 3 miles out, at 5 miles out on the CCT, and then at 8 miles out on the CCT just before Bethesda. The two water fountains at 5 and 8 miles are good turn-around landmarks if you're looking for either a 10 mile or 16 mile run.

Thank you Liz Kakouris for mid-run drinks this week and Christie Wetzel for post-run drinks! We will need more volunteers for mid-run drinks starting next week, as there are lots of openings in the schedule. Please take a look at what's needed, and let me know when you can help out.

SLR June 24 - RFK

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week, on June 24, will be 12 miles to RFK (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). This is an out & back route, so you can shorten it to any other distance you like by turning around earlier. For a longer run, you can extend this route to 16 miles by taking a left at 15th St on your way back, and going down around the tip of Hains Point before heading back along the river up to Memorial Bridge. Some rain is in the forecast for the early hours of tomorrow morning, but hopefully it will have passed by 7:00 am. Either way, be ready for a very humid run with the dew point above 70 deg F, and be sure to stay hydrated!

Mid-run drinks this week will be near the center of Lincoln Park on E Capitol St, thanks to Erin and John Velasco! Going out and back to RFK, you'll pass them twice at about 5.25 and 7 miles. Thanks also to Elizabeth Kelley for post-run drinks over the last few weeks! There are lots of openings in our volunteer schedule after next week for mid-run drinks, so please take a look and let me know when you can help out.
