Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR Dec 22 - Festivus Holiday Route

Hello Saturday Runners and Happy Holidays!

This Sat, Dec. 22nd, we will be running our annual Festivus Holiday Run. The listed route mileage is 11 miles. Please check the cue sheet for directions and map. Please thank Angela Katson for providing our post-run drinks!  I will be out of town but will have a sub getting things started.

Keep an eye out for the National Christmas Tree by the ellipse near the White House, the National Menorah, another big Christmas tree in front of the Capital Building, as well as additional holiday cheer around town and in Georgetown.  Route is 11 miles, do more or less as needed.  You can always run it twice for a 22 mile long run!

Stay warm out there - I think its supposed to be windy this weekend. Enjoy the holiday décor!

SLR Dec 15 - Cathedral + Clintons

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Dec. 15th, we will be running the Cathedral + Clintons route. The listed route mileage is 13 miles. Please check the cue sheet for directions and map. Mileage options to follow.  Please thank Randy Larkin for once again providing our post-run drinks!

Directions: Everyone should be pretty familiar with the route but double check the cue sheet if you have any doubts!

Mileage Options:

11: While on Cleveland Ave, take a left (instead of a right) on 34th street to cut off Cathedral portion.  Then left on Massachusetts Ave to rejoin the route. This cuts off a mile.  Then you can also return via Key Bridge to cut off another mile.

13: Run route as written, take Rock Creek trail back, and cross Memorial Bridge to return

15: As you are on your way back on the Rock Creek trail, run up toward the Lincoln Memorial and out Henry Bacon Dr. to run on path next to Constitution Ave, right on 17th Street, past WWII memorial, right on Independence Ave, take that back to Memorial Bridge; this adds 2 miles

Enjoy this club favorite route! Happy Running!

SLR Dec 8 - Chain Bridge Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Dec 8th, we will be running the Chain Bridge Loop route of 10 miles. Other distance options to follow.

Please give a big thanks to Randy Larkin who is handling post-run drinks! We could still use more volunteers for beverages in the winter months (especially the last 2 Saturdays of December), its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses you - Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

We have a few options if you wish to run more (or less miles); of course run the route as listed in cue sheet for 10 miles.  To add on a few exta, instead of coming back via the Key Bridge, do the "bridge-to-bridge" route and come back via Memorial Bridge.  For even more you can run out and around the National Mall in D.C.

To shorten route (I'll be doing this), there is a cool section that involves some trail running.  While on Military Road, take a right on 30th Street, adjacent to Donaldson Run Park.  After about 100 meters, take a small staircase down to Donaldson Run Trail.  This trail meets up with the Potomac Heritage Trail which you take a right on to get back to Rosslyn.  You should be comfortable with trail running on varied terrain and potentially walking in some spots.  I'm guessing this would make the route about 7 miles, though factor in more time for the trail sections.

Should be a fun one - enjoy!
