Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR May 18 - Arlington Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, May 18th, we will be running the Arlington Triangle Route, listed at just over 16 miles. There is an option for 12 miles (below), shorter than that and you'll just have to make it an out and back.  Check the cue sheet and map if you need to.

Please thank Rick DeSaussure for our post-run drinks! As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Seriously everyone, the need for drinks is about to get real.  We need post-run beverage volunteers every month (no one on deck for June, July or August) and once the weather heats up in June we will be needing mid-run drink volunteers (one per week).  If you run regularly with the group you should be helping out - its all member supported so lets keep each other going all summer long! Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out with any beverage needs.

12 mile Option:  If you would like 12 miles, you can do a "loli-pop" loop utilizing the 4 mile run trail. About 6 miles in while running on 4 Mile Run, take Mt. Vernon Ave south across the River, then hop back on the 4 mile run trail to head back. Take Route 1 North to continue on 4 Mile run then return via the Mt. Vernon Trail.

Might want to bring some shades if its sunny out, I seem to recall having the sun in my eyes a lot on this one.  Enjoy this great running weather!

SLR May 11 - RFK Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, May 11th, we will be running the RFK Loop route, listed at 12.5 miles. Check the cue sheet for clarification. I won't be there but will have a sub starting things off.

Please thank Holly Shick for our post-run drinks! As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

A word of advice: rather than running around the road portion behind RFK (next to fast moving cars), you should be able to run directly behind the stadium. If you want a little less miles just turn around early - turning around in Lincoln Park (before you have reached RFK) will get you about a 9.5 Mile Run.

If you need more miles you can connect with the Mt. Vernon trail north and loop around Roosevelt Island, then come back through Rosslyn. This would add about 2 miles. Each loops is 1.25 miles so you can do more loops as desired.

Happy Running!

SLR May 4 - Marymount/ Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, May 4th we will be running the Marymount/ Chain Bridge loop route, listed at 14 miles. Check the cue sheet for clarification.

Please thank Holly Shick for post-run beverages!  Additional drink volunteers are always appreciated - its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses.  Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out

Mileage Options:

11: Continue on Military Road (don't run up through Zach Taylor Park), cutting off Marymount College portion, rejoin the route with a right onto Old Glebe Rd.

14: Run route as written

17: Continue through Georgetown, past Kennedy Center and return via Memorial Bridge ("Bridge to bridge")

Happy Running!!
