Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR May 23 - RFK

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday May 23rd, our route will be RFK for about 12.25 miles (additional map here). If you'd like to extend the route to 16 miles, you can add a dip down to Hains Point on the way back by taking a left at the Washington Monument. Take another left just before the Jefferson Memorial onto Ohio Drive, and follow it down around the point and back to the Lincoln Memorial. If you'd rather do a run shorter than 12 miles, just turn around when you've gone half your desired distance.

I will be out of town this weekend, but Miguel Cuya will be starting the run for you on Saturday morning.

Thank you Flora Arabo for post-run beverages this week! I've posted our routes for this summer, through the Marine Corps Marathon, so please take a look at the schedule and think about what weekends you will be available to help with either post-run or mid-run drinks. We are in need of volunteers for mid-run drinks in June and onward, and you can always find current volunteer needs on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses. If everyone can pick up only one week for mid-run drinks, we'll have no trouble keeping our water stops stocked all summer long!

Happy running!

Mike

SLR May 16 - Glover / Mass / Crescent

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, May 16th, we will be running about 12.75 miles on the Glover / Mass / Crescent route (additional map here). To shorten the route to 11 miles you can turn left off of Mass Ave at Nebraska Ave, continue straight as it turns into Loughboro Rd, cross MacArthur Blvd and go straight down Norton St past the reservoir, and onto the Captial Crescent Trail via the cut-through we use on the Battery Kemble route. If you want a longer run, you can add as much distance as you like on the Capital Crescent Trail.

The weather this weekend looks like it's going to be warming up again after a few days relief, but hopefully we can sneak in before it on Saturday morning. For all of our group runs, and any runs you do on your own in the heat, remember to always keep safety as your top priority. Even if you're a seasoned runner, these hot weather running tips from the RRCA can be a helpful reminder since high temperatures will be approaching 90 deg both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

Thank you Flora Arabo for post-run beverages! With summer on its way, we will be needing volunteers for mid-run drinks in June, so take a look at the SLR page for current needs, and think about when you're available to help.

Mike

SLR May 9 - Southeast DC

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, May 9th, our route is Southeast DC (additional map here) for 13.5 miles. For a longer run of about 16.5 miles, you can stay on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail until Benning Rd, cross the river here, and take Benning Rd to Maryland Ave back to the Capitol. On the other hand, if you'd like a shorter run of about 10.5 miles along our planned route, you can bring a few dollars or a SmarTrip card and take the Metro on your way back from Smithsonian to Rosslyn.

Thank you Angela Katson for post-run beverages this week! With warmer weather on its way, we will be needing volunteers for both mid-run and post-run drinks in June, so take a look at the SLR page for current needs, and think about when you're available to help. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks for post-run drinks. Beverage duty is easy, much appreciated by our group, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike
