Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR September 5 - MCM Mock Route

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday September 5, we will be running 16 miles on the MCM Mock Route (additional map here). If you're running the Marine Corps Marathon this fall, this is a great chance to get a preview of what's in store for you on October 25!  Please note that the 2015 race route is slightly different than the 2012 route linked on our mock route description page, but you can review an interactive map of this year's route here.

If you'd like to go for a longer distance while making your run even more like the race route, add an out & back section on Lee Hwy (to Adams St) and/or Rock Creek Park Trail (to the first creek crossing footbridge).  Each one of these will add about 2 miles, so if you do both the route will be 20 miles according to this map.  If you only do one of the two for 18 miles, I'd recommend doing the Lee Hwy out & back, which gives you a chance to run up and down the biggest hill anywhere on the MCM course. To shorten the route, I'd recommend less distance on the Mall - if you skip these sections entirely and go directly from Hains Point back to the start, the distance will be about 10.5 miles.

Thank you Dan Lesmez for post-run beverages this week! We are in need of mid-run volunteers for both this week and next week, and post-run volunteers starting Sept 19, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know if you can cover either of these. As always, you can email me any dates you'd like to do mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club. Please volunteer; it's your duty if you regularly participate in SLR!

Happy running!

Mike

SLR August 29 - Piney Branch

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday August 29, our route will be Piney Branch (additional map here), which comes in at about 11.75 miles. To add distance, this route can be extended to 16 miles by continuing straight on 16th Street, past Military Rd., and left on Joyce Rd.  This will take you down to Beach Dr. where you can cross and head up Ross Dr. for some scenic views on your way to picking up the route again below Pierce Mill.

Thank you Franco Ordonez for bringing post-run beverages for the last few weeks, and thanks also to Janet Braunstein for this week's mid-run drinks. We are in need of mid-run volunteers for both of the next 2 weeks, and post-run volunteers starting Sept 19, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know if you can cover either of these.

SLR August 22 - C&O Canal Towpath

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday August 22, we will be running out & back on the C&O Canal Towpath (additional map here) with a planned distance of 18 miles. You can easily run as short or as long as you like on this route, by simply turning around whenever you get to half of your desired distance. Once you get on the Towpath, the mile markers will roughly match the distance you've traveled from the start. The forecast looks like we're getting a somewhat cooler morning on Saturday, so I hope you all make the most of it on your long runs!

Thanks go to Franco Ordonez for bringing post-run beverages this week, and to Mrs. Big Guy who will be at Lock 7 with our mid-run drinks. We will be needing more volunteers starting in 2 weeks, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know what you can cover. Please email me any dates you can do mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club. Without your volunteer support, we wouldn't have the mid-run and post-run drinks that keep you going every week, so please help!

Happy running!

Mike
