Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Feb 4 - Rock Creek out and back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Feb 4th, we will be running the Rock Creek Park out and back route.  The listed route mileage is 20 miles, but since its an out and back you can do as you please.  Thank you again to Randy Larkin for post-run beverages this week.

As always we seek volunteers for post-run beverages in the coming months.  We try to have people do 1 month at a time for logistics purposes.  Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses.  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Directions: Starting at Iwo Jima Memorial, take Memorial Bridge, and then go left to travel North on the Rock Creek Park Trail, past the Watergate and past Georgetown, and then just keep on truckin’!  At 4.2 miles out, stay on main trail and go around the tunnel (not through it).  At 6.5 miles out pass Pierce Mill (bathroom stop with water here), trail passes a parking lot, crosses a road and empties out onto Beach Rd, which is closed to cars on weekends. Check the Map-my-run map just in case.

Approx. Mileage Options (turn around)

  • 10: At 5 miles out, trail passes Zoo entrances, water/bathrooms ~50ft inside.
  • 13: At 6.5 miles out is Pierce Mill, water/bathrooms here too
  • 16.6: At 8.3 miles out is Park Ranger Station.  Might be water across the street.
  • 20:  At 10 miles out is Sherrill Drive NW (on right), turn around for a 20 mile long run!

Have a great run!  Let’s hope this warm winter weather keeps up!

SLR Jan 28 - Mt. Vernon Trail out & back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Jan 28th, we will be running the Mt. Vernon Trail out and back route.  The suggested distance is 16 miles with other options as well.  Thank you again to Randy Larkin for post-run beverages this week.  I will be out of town this weekend so Howell Posner has been kind enough to take over SLR lead.

Directions:   Starting at Iwo Jima Memorial, take Memorial Bridge then embark on Mt. Vernon trail south alongside the Potomac River.  Its an out and back so do as you please!  Double check the cue sheet and map-my-run map just in case.  Mileage options with landmarks below.

Approx. Mileage Options

10: Go 5 miles out to the end of National Airport, turn around after you cross the Four Mile Run stream.

11: 5.5 miles out there is a Sailing Marina (mile marker 12)

14: 7 miles out turn around at beginning of Old Town Alexandria, near railroad tracks

16:  Continue into Old Town, run down Royal Street and run to Wilkes, turn around

A word on winter weather: although last week was iffy, about a dozen of us got our run in on what turned out to be mostly wet roads.  In the future, I am going to go by that same SLR Winter Weather Policy, that is that as of 7:00am the morning of the SLR, if roads and paved surfaces have enough accumulation of ice or snow to make driving or running unsafe, or if accumulation is falling at a rate that will make it unsafe, there will be an unofficial (non-DCRRC) SLR; I will not be there and post-run drinks might not arrive either.  Any participants should use caution while both driving and running.

Have a good run and enjoy this week’s enticing glimpse of Old Town Alexandria!

SLR - Winter Weather Policy

As you no doubt have seen, weather conditions may be a factor for the Saturday Long Run tomorrow.

Weather.com predicts snow, changing to a "wintry mix" overnight, with sub-freezing temps and freezing rain/ice from 3am on into the morning hours.

As of now, the SLR is still on as planned, however, if there is already an accumulation of ice on paved surfaces as of 7:00am tomorrow morning (and the ice/sleet continues) there will be an "unofficial" SLR at the usual time and place.  I will not be there and may disavow any knowledge of your actions, so run at your own risk using caution at all times; post-run beverages also might not be present.

The planned SLR Itinerary is the DC Sightseer route, with options from 9 up to 18 miles.  Cross your fingers that its only rain and we will be on as planned.
