Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Mar 29 - CapCrescent Big Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, Mar 29th the route is the Capital Crescent to Rock Creek BIG Loop.  I know we just did this like a month ago, but its one of the best long run routes we have, and with Boston in 3 weeks (as well as a few other Spring marathons still coming up) plenty of folks will be needing a long run. Its a very big loop at over 22 miles. You can cut off some of the top by cutting through some Chevy Chase neighborhoods to get make it more like 20.5 miles (I can explain before SLR). Other than that you will just have to make it an out and back - if you turn around when you reach Bethesda this will give you a 16 mile run.

If you are running Boston this year, please email me to get on the DCRRC Boston Team and ensure you recieve social event updates.

Thank You to Paul & Christine Westcott for more fine post-run drink work! We do need drink volunteers soon! Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Its important to stay hyrdrated on these longer runs, even in the cool weather, which may mean carrying it with you. Some of the water fountains are on all winter, and you can even buy a drink in Bethesda if you bring a few bucks with you. Fortunetely it is starting to warm up some out there!  You'll pass a few water fountains and restrooms (ie Pierce Mill) coming back through Rock Creek park too.

Try to enjoy winter while it lasts - before you know it it will be 90 and humd out Cool Happy Running!

SLR Mar 22 - Yow-T Route/ Hains Point

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, March 22nd the route is the Yow-"T" route, (map here). Its almost 14 [flat] miles as-is, but easily modifiable by cutting off Hains Point (for about 3 less), running more out around the Mall, or coming back through Rosslyn (adds about 1.5 miles).

Please be mindful that the skybridge over N. Lynn and N. Moore Streets is being demolished and the road will be closed on the weekends so you may need an alternate route if coming through Rosslyn.  Basically, give yourself some extra time.  The work should not affect the running route this week.  Read the specifics on ARL-now.

Thank You to Paul & Christine Westcott for more fine post-run drink work! As always, we are looking for additional drink volunteers for Spring.  The warmer it gets out ther more important the drinks are - Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Spring has arrived! Though it might not be here to stay, we should have great running weather this weekend with temps in the 50s!

Happy Running!

SLR Mar 15 - Custis to W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

Due to a lot of activity in the area, we will be doing a simple out and back on the Custis and W&OD trail.  The Rock-n-Roll USA Marathon and Half-Marathon will be going on in D.C., and there will be a race in Courthouse.  Road closures may also be an issue if you are driving through D.C. so plan accordingly.  There will also be some road closures in VA but these should not affect SLR runners since we start at 8:00am.

I put down 18 miles for those in Marathon Training, but feel free to do less.  Best bet for water would be at Westover Park, next to basketball courts right before the trail goes under I-66 (this is 5 miles out).

Thank You to Paul and Christine Westcott for post-run drink work! As always, we are looking for additional drink volunteers for Spring. Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Looks like great running weather tomorrow with starting temps in the high 40s! Happy Running!

-- Erik
