Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR July 11 - Capital Crescent Trail

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week we will be running out and back on the Capital Crescent Trail (additional map here). The planned distance is 13 miles, but you can easily run as short or as long as you'd like on this route by simply turning around whenever you get to half of your target distance. To get 13 miles, the turnaround point is near Mass Ave. You can turn around earlier at the water fountain just before the tunnel for 10 miles, or at the water fountain just before Bethesda for 16 miles. Hopefeully the weather forecast holds out, and it's a nice cool & clear morning on Saturday! I'm going to be out of town this week, but Andrew Simpson will be starting the run for you.

Thank you Garett Rose for providing post-run beverages! Once again, this week we do not currently have a mid-run beverage volunteer. If nobody steps up before Saturday, there are a number of water fountains on this route that you'll pass in both directions, at the Francis Scott Key Memorial (1 mi), Fletcher's Boathouse (3.5 mi), the Dalecarlia Tunnel (5 mi), and Bethesda (8 mi, if you're going far enough to reach it).

We have plenty of volunteer opportunities this summer for both mid-run and post-run drinks, with up to date needs posted on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses. If you enjoy the beverages provided for our runs, please do your part and volunteer!

Happy running!

Mike

SLR July 4 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

Happy 4th of July! This week's holiday route will be out and back on the Rock Creek Park trail (additional map here). The planned distance is 14 miles, but you can easily run as short or as long as you'd like on this route by simply turning around whenever you get to half the distance you'd like. To get 14 miles, the turnaround point is near Pierce Mill. Turn around earlier at the Zoo for 10 miles, or stay on Beach Dr for 20+ miles.

Thank you Garett Rose for providing post-run beverages this week! We do not currently have a mid-run beverage volunteer for this weekend, so if nobody steps up before Saturday, we'll have to rely on water fountains that are on or near the trail, at the Lincoln Memorial, National Zoo, and Pierce Mill. We also do not have a mid-run volunteer for next week, July 11, so let me know if you can cover either this week or next week. There are plenty of other volunteer opportunities this summer for both mid-run and post-run drinks, with up to date needs posted on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR June 27 - National Capitol

Hello Saturday Runners!

The route on Saturday June 27 will be 12 miles along the National Capitol route (additional map here). To shorten the route, return directly via the Key Bridge, retracing your steps from the way out, to get about 9.5 miles. For additional mileage, you can easily add distance on either Hains Point or the Mt Vernon Trail.

Thank you Afton Wagner for providing post-run beverages this week, and thanks also to Joe Emerson for mid-run beverages! We are in need of mid-run volunteers starting next week for July 4 and July 11, so let me know if you can cover either one. There are also plenty of other volunteer opportunities this summer for both mid-run and post-run drinks, with up to date needs posted on the SLR page. Please email me any dates you can cover mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike
