Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 7:00 AM for the remainder of the summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR October 22 - Chain Bridge Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, on October 22, we will be running the 10 mile Chain Bridge Loop (additional map here) to continue tapering for Marine Corps and other marathons happening next week. If you'd like to go longer than 10 miles, you can keep going past the Key Bridge and return over Memorial Bridge for 12 miles, or use our standard Marymount - Chain Bridge route for 14 miles. Thankfully this week's unseasonably hot weather is on its way out, and we should have a great morning for running tomorrow with temperatures starting around 50 degrees!

With the Marine Corps Marathon coming up, DCRRC will be partnering with Hope For Warriors, so if you or your family & friends would like to help out with refreshments or directing runner traffic at the finish line, check out the club's volunteer page for more info and registration details. Also, if you're looking for something a little bit different this Saturday morning, you can join local star ultrarunner Michael Wardian on a MCM training run starting from MedStar Health at Lafayette Center (more details on our club contingent and the run) at 8:00 am. (But for those not interested, don't worry - SLR will still go on as normal!)

Thank you Anita Hines for post-run drinks for the last two weeks! We will need a volunteer to cover 3 weeks of post-run drinks starting next week, to bridge the gap until the next marathon training program (targeting Rock & Roll DC) gets going, so please let me know now if you can help. Up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, please do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR October 15 - Mt Vernon Trail

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday begins the taper cutback for those of you running the Marine Corps Marathon, so on October 15 we will be running the Mt Vernon Trail (additional map here) for a recommended 14 miles, or any other distance of your choice. This is an out & back route, so you can easily lengthen or shorten it to suit your own training needs, and simply turn around when you've reached half your target distance. Don't forget that with the warm weather over we no longer have organized mid-run drinks, so be sure to carry your own water if you expect to need it on the run. As a backup, you'll pass 2 water fountains going 14 miles, one newly added near the airport, and one at the turn-around point 7 miles out. The weather forecast is looking like we'll have a gorgeous cool fall morning tomorrow, so bring your sunglasses and long-sleeve shirts, and I hope to see you there!

Thank you Anita Hines for post-run drinks this week! We will need a volunteer to cover 3 weeks of post-run drinks starting after next week, to bridge the gap until the next marathon training program (targeting Rock & Roll DC) gets going, so please let me know if you can help.

SLR Litter / Trash

Saturday Runners,

On a few occasions recently, we've had some problems with trash being left in North Meade Street park on Saturday mornings after our group run. To avoid any issues with continuing to meet at this location, I'd ask that each of you please pay closer attention and make sure nothing is left behind. Cleanup of the post-run beverages after we're finished is the responsibility of each week's volunteer (or the next week's volunteer, if there's a bin handoff), but if everyone helps keep things in order, hopefully this won't be a problem again in the future. If you're leaving SLR and see any trash left behind after the bins have been taken away, pelase help pick things up and leave North Meade Street Park at least as clean and litter-free as we find it each week.

Happy running!

Mike
