1. Fort Hunt 8K: Thanks to Scott Boggess and his crew of volunteers for successfully hosting last night's 8K at Fort Hunt. We appreciate all the runners who did show up, despite the threat of stormy weather and the bad traffic. Due to the traffic factor, we will consider re-locating this race back to Belle Haven for 2008 -- but with the addition of a second water stop and bicyclists to monitor the runners on the course.

Special thanks to those runners last night who noticed a fellow competitor in distress and did all they could to help. This is the second incident this summer in which we have needed emergency medical assistance due to a runner showing signs of heat-related distress. In both cases, it was the alert response of fellow competitors/runners that was key to getting help when it was needed. Please follow this example when you are out on the course, track, or trail. The Club is 100 percent committed to the safety of its members and race participants, and will make decisions regarding races and workouts with that uppermost in mind.

We regret if anyone was inconvenienced by the decision to shorten the race to 8K. However, in light of the weather, both actual and predicted, and the need for a later start, this was a good decision on the race director's part.

2. 10-Mile Training Program: The 10-Mile training program, which is geared to the Army 10-mile but suitable for those running any fall race in the 15K to Half Marathon range, started on Saturday morning, July 14, 2007. If you are still interested in participating, please see details under the Programs button to your left.

3. Club Track Races July 25, 2007: Race calendar will be updated shortly. Due to Washington-Lee construction and the resulting lane limitations, the races are at Wakefield High School , 4901 So. Chesterfield Road, Arlington 22206 Google Map Here:

http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=4901+S+Chesterfield+Rd,+Arlington,+VA+22206&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=1

The races will start at 6:30, and will include gender- and age-based events (depending on size of entry) for the 1-mile run, and performance-seeded heats for the 3000M run.

4. July Track Workouts: Please note that scheduled workouts will now be posted on a separate blog entry under the "Track Workouts" button the left. This will allow for direct posting of schedules, interactive comments, and late-breaking information related to the Wednesday track workouts.

July 25th: Track Races at Wakefield High School. No workout at Washington-Lee.

More information to come.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON FORT HUNT 10k

Club Members and Guests:

IMPORTANT WEATHER/CANCELLATION UPDATE ON FORT HUNT 10K: AS OF 3:45 PM, THE RACE IS STILL ON.

WHILE THE SKIES SEEM TO BE CLEARING AT THE MOMENT, THERE IS A THUNDER STORM WATCH UNTIL 10:00 PM. IF WE STAY IN THE STATUS OF A "WATCH", AND THERE IS NO LIGHTNING IN THE AREA, THE RACE IS ON. HOWEVER, THE RACE MAY BE SHORTENED TO 8K OR EVEN 5K IF NECESSARY TO GET THE RACE COMPLETED BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF MORE SEVERE WEATHER.

IF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE UPGRADES THE FORECAST TO A THUNDERSTORM "WARNING" THAT INCLUDES FAIRFAX COUNTY, AND THAT WARNING IS TO LAST LATER THAN 7:30 PM, THE RACE WILL BE CANCELLED. YOU CAN LISTEN TO WTOP (103.5 FM) FOR A RELIABLE REPORT.

I WILL CHECK CONDITIONS AGAIN AT 5:30 AND, IF THERE IS ANYTHING TO ADD, MAKE A NEW POSTING.
