20-M Still Open; Volunteer Needs for 9/30 Races

Club Members and Guests:

A lot coming up this week, with the 20-miler highlighting the events. We also need 3-4 volunteers for a closer-in 10K race in West Potomac Park, also on September 30th. Please read below for details, as well as for information on our "volunteer incentives!"

<20-Miler Packet Pick-Up will be at Gotta Run, 1101 South Joyce St., on Pantagon Row in South Arlington. Time is from 11 AM TO 3 PM

1. 20-Miler Still Open; High-Tech T-Shirts to Pre-Registrants! At last count, we are approaching about 400 registrants for the National Capital 20-Miler on September 30. So, spots are still available, but if you want to run, be sure to sign up soon to guarantee your entry, and to ensure that you will receive one of the high-tech t-shirts that will be guaranteed ONLY to those who register in advance. (Those who register at packet pick-up or on site cannot be guaranteed a shirt, although we will certainly try to accommodate you.)

To register, click on the 20-Miler link just to the left of this blog.

2. Volunteers Needed! We have the following specific volunteer needs for the 20-Miler, as well as for the Rediscovery 10K, a race we co-sponsor each year in West Potomac Park. Due to a calendar quirk, both fall on the same day this year. Here's our needs:

a. Timers/Finish Line for 20-Miler We 3-4 people to time the finishers, pull tags, and help with scoring the 20-Miler. While it would be helpful for you to be there for the 7:30 start of the race, it is not essential. But you should be there and ready to go by 9:00 at the latest. Please let me know directly if you can help.

b. Purchase and Bring Post-Race Refreshments: We need a couple of volunteers to purchase the bagels, bananas, and cookies that we serve to finishers of the 20-miler and 5-Miler. These items will need to arrive at the finish line at Carl sandburg Middle School by 8:00 to guarantee sufficient time to set up. Please let me know directly if you can help.

c. Packet Pick-Up: As noted, pick-up is from 11 to 3 at Gotta Run on So Joyce St., Pentagon Row, Arlington. We need about 4 people who can help out with this; you do not need to stay the entire time. Please let me know if you can help, and at what times.

d. Rediscovery 10K -- Timing and Finish Line We need 3-4 people to help out with the timing and finish on this race, which starts at 8:30 on Ohio Drive in West Potomac Park. Volunteers should have some finish line/timing experience. We need one of these volunteers to a "captain" who can bring equipment to and from the race. Please let me know if you can help.

3. Volunteer Incentives: Volunteers for the 20-miler will receive a special t-shirt, as well as refreshments on site, as well as the gratitude of 400-plus tired and thirsty runners! Volunteers for the Rediscovery 10K will receive a race t-shirt and another prize from the Fall 2007 DCRRC merchandise line!

Thanks for your help in all these endeavors -- you make what we do possible, as well as fun.

Run well,

Ed

20-Miler; September Schedules

Members and Guests:

1. Narional Capital Area 20-Miler Coming Soon! The 23rd Annual National Capital 20-Miler will be held Sunday, September 30th, at 7:30 a.m., starting at the Carl Sandburg Middle School in the Alexandria/Mount Vernon section of Fairfax County. This race has been for many years the prime tune-up for the Marine Corps and other fall marathons. It is one of our signature races, and takes an enormous amount of effort from race director Chuck Evans, and his co-diretors, bob and Delabian Thurston.

VOLUNTEERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED! If you can help in any capacity, please contact Delabian Thurston at delabian@aol.com It greatly assists the race directors to know well in advance who they can count on, so please sign up early. Benefits include: A long-sleeve t-shirt, and completion of your volunteer requirement for EITHER the just-completed Bunion Derby or the forthcming 2007-2008 Snowball Series.

Of course, we hope that those of you who want to run a race of this length will do so! Sign up early to get the best entry fee!

2. Larry Noel Greenbelt 15K: The 49th running of this event took place Sunday night in unusually fair conditions. Results are posted. Thanks for RD Ben Richter and his large and outstanding crew of volunteers for putting on this 15K and the accompanying 3K.

3. September Track Workouts: Track workouts will continue each Wednesday night this month on the Washington-Lee track. (There are no scheduled conflicts at this point.) We will follow the schedule posted on the Track Workout page. This week will be 4 x 5:00 at 5K pace, with a 5:00 rest interval. This workout will really rest and assess your fitness -- please be there!

4. Saturday Long Run: The salad days of long runs in the fall are upon us! Kerry O'Brien is always on the lookout for refreshments volunteers, both mid-course and at the end of the workout at Iwo Jima. Please contact Kerry at raptorkerry@yahoo.com if you can help. Check out the planned runs on the SLR page.

5. Board Meeting September 10th: The regularly-scheduled bi-monthly meeting of the DCRRC Board will take place Monday, 9/10, at the Silver Diner in Clarendon. Agenda will include planning for 20-Miler and Turkey Trot, as well as preiminary planning for our 2008 race schedule.

Run well!

Burke Lake 4.5M Info; Upcoming Events

Members and Guests:

August 21st BURKE LAKE 4.5 MILE RACE INFORMATION: We apologize for the fact that the link to this race on the Race Schedule was not functioning. It should be functioning now. Nevertheless, here is the information you will need. VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED FOR THIS EVENT. PLEASE ARRIVE AROUND 6:00 IF YOU CAN HELP. (LATER IS OKAY IF YOU CAN HELP WITH TIMING AND OTHER FINISH LINE DUTIES).

START: The race starts at 7:00 pm SHARP on Tuesday August 21st. Due to sundown at approximately 8:00, we will ask those runners who anticipate running at a pace of 10:30 per mile or slower to be available for an "early start" at 6:45 pm SHARP. We will start the bulk of the field precisely 15:00 after this early start, so the early starters will be able to easily calculate their times.

Please do not participate in the early start unless you meet these time criteria. Those who do so and who obviously belonged with the main group will risk being disqualified from the socring of the race.

Because of the time constraints on this race, we will not be able to accommodate walkers.

DIRECTIONS: The entrance to Burke Lake Park is off Route 123 (Ox Road). It is the first left after the golf course. To reach the race, take Beltway exit 54 (old exit 5), West on Braddock Rd (Rt.620) about 1.6 mi to Burke Lake Rd (Rt. 645). Left about 4.5 mi to Ox Road (Rt. 123), L about 0.6 mi to first left past the golf course clubhouse, follow signs to ice cream parlour. (You will be bearing left.)

COURSE: The course is a 4.5 mile loop around Burke Lake, mostly on trail but with some road segments. The link to the course map is functioning.

We look forward to seeing you at the race!

OTHER NEWS:

1. Greenbelt 15K September 2nd:
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! Please join us to volunteer or compete at the Larry Noel 15K on Sunday, September 2nd, at 5:00 pm. Location: Greenbelt, MD. A great way to finish off your summer season, or start the fall season. (The weatherman will determine which.) Always a fun event, and always in need of volunteers. See information to the left.

2. 20-Miler Fast Approaching: Registration is now open for this signature race on the Club's schedule. Sunday September 30, 2007, at 7:30 am. PLEASE consider volunteering for this event. It takes a lot of hands to do all the work necessary -- you do not have to stay for the entire race; in fact, getting a "new crew" who can arrive at 10:00 and stay until noon is always a big help.

Run well.

Ed
