Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

7AM Saturday, June 13

Hello Saturday runners!  This week we run the RFK route at 7AM.

I will be in MN reuniting with my high school class, but I leave you in the guidance of Scott Smith, who will be leading in my absence.  Be sure to thank him, as well as your friendly neighborhood beverage volunteers-- Ben Richter out on the course, and Karol Murray for the post-run Gatorade happy hour.  Have a great run everybody!

Also, we're still looking for volunteers for upcoming weeks.  I anticipate July 4 will be an especially needy weekend, as it is a holiday and we have a club race as well.  Please let me know if you can help out and keep SLR running smoothly!

7AM Saturday, June 6

Hello SLR Runners,

This week's route is a simple one to ease us into the 7am summer start time-- Out-and-Back on the C&O, so even if you decide to sleepwalk through the route, all you need to remember is to begin at 7 and turn around when you have run half as far as you want your total to be for the day.  The suggested distance is 10 miles (so turn around at mile marker 5), but you may do more or less as you prefer.

Also, the Fall Marathon Training Program will begin this Saturday, so we should have many friendly faces and people with whom to run!

Karol Murray will provide post-run beverages for us, and Aaron, Sharone, and/or Noah Cheskis will greet us with beverages and smiles out on the course near Fletcher's, so be sure to thank them for helping us out!

I will also have a sign-up book for volunteer roles for upcoming SLR weeks.  As always, we'll be looking for help with beverages.  And for something new-- pace leaders!  So whatever your pace, don't be afraid to join us!  We are especially looking for leaders in the 9-12+ minutes per mile ranges.

Please think of when and how you can contribute, thank you for whatever patience you may need to practice as I take over for our very capable Kerry, and thanks for keeping SLR running smoothly!

One final note:  please confirm with the Metro website (www.wmata.com), but I have heard from a reliable source that Metro will open at 5am because of Race for the Cure.  In case that makes transportation easier for anyone.  :)

See you Saturday!

Kristin
