Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM for the rest of the year. Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

To receive weekly SLR updates via email, please log in and check your email subscriptions.

Double the Fun Independence Day Weekend!

Hello Runners!

After much deliberation, and FINALLY getting street closure information, I have decided to hold TWO SLR events this weekend.  Feel free to attend either/both:

1.  Business as usual.   We are going to keep the streak of meeting every Saturday at Iwo Jima alive.  Parking will be challenging, but so is distance running in the summer in DC.  You will need to self-supply your beverages.  The best way to access by car is to come from the west via 50 and park in the neighborhood up the hill.  Arlington street closure details:

http://www.arlingtonva.us/Departments/Police/news/printarticle.asp?ID=668

2.  Supplemental SUNDAY LONG RUN-- same thing, only we'll leave from Iwo Jima on Sunday, July 5, at 8AM.  That's EIGHT AM SUNDAY.  The run is short, so we can start a little later (gives you one more hour to recover from festivities) and still be finished at a reasonable time.  Same route.  Kristin will provide midpoint and post-run beverages.  Parking and streets will be re-opened by Sunday, and this will also allow those who wish to participate or volunteer in the July 4 race at Carderock a morning long run option this weekend.

Many have varied plans for the weekend, so I look forward to seeing those who can make it to Iwo Jima on Saturday and/or Sunday, and can't wait to catch up with everyone else after that!!

June 27 SLR

Saturday November 22, 2008

Hello runners! Some news this week. First, this week we're running a newly modified route. Thanks so much to Andrew Kent and Marianne Nazzaro for helping to figure this out. It's flatter than last week, but also may be a bit, um, sunny, so think about bringing water and a little cab cash just in case. There will be a few stops for drinks, as Rick DeSaussure is doing a double midpoint stop (we'll hit it twice-- stash your cup for re-use)-- thanks, Rick!

Also, we've got some new info on recycling. Thanks to Colleen Marzec for initiating this program and for carrying it out. Let us know if you'd like to help!

Finally, we have no midpoint volunteer for next week. Please let me know if you can help, or we'll be on our own for midpoint bevs.

SLR Goes Green
Thanks to everyone who “pitched in” at the June 20 SLR by throwing the empty plastic bottles into our new yellow recycling bin (which is actually used, but new to the team).

In an effort to reduce the team’s environmental footprint, Colleen Marzec has volunteered to haul our post-run Gatorade & water bottles and plastic cups to an Arlington curb each week for recycling. All plastics #1-7 are eligible, so be sure to throw your plastic cups in the bin, too. If you’d like to help or have ideas on how we can make SLR even greener, please contact Colleen at cmarzec@juno.com.
