Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR December 31 - Long Bridge Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

For your last run of 2016, on New Year's Eve morning we will be doing a 15 mile loop to Long Bridge Park (additional map here). To shorten the run to about 10 miles, you can take a left off of Crystal Drive just before 18th St. to cut over onto the Mt. Vernon Trail at National Airport. If you'd rather add distance, you can return all the way up the Mt. Vernon Trail to Rosslyn for an extra mile, or add laps of Roosevelt Island on the way for even more miles. If you showed up for last Saturday's soggy and cold run (congrats to those who did!), the weather should be much better this week, with cool temps and dry skies!

Thanks again this week to Kyle Edgerton for post-run drinks! We now need more volunteers starting next week, to carry us into the new year, so please let me know any time when you'll be able to help out for at least 2 consecutive weeks. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route schedule are always kept up-to-date on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, you should do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR December 24 - Christmas Tree Run (Take 2)

Hello Saturday Runners!

After last week's cancellation for ice, we'll try again this week at the annual Christmas Tree Run (map here), normally a 10 mile route, which can easily be extended to 13 miles (extended map here). If you've run this route with us in the past, note that I've switched it up a little bit this year, to take us past the largest decorated tree in DC at City Center on New York Ave! The 13 mile version adds some out & back distance on East Capitol Street (turning around at 18th St), which is also decked out for the holidays. To shorten this route to be under 10 miles, you could take a right directly down to the Mall at 15th St after passing the White House and pick up the route there, which would be about a 6 mile loop.

Thank you Kyle Edgerton for post-run drinks! We will need more volunteers after next week, starting at the beginning of the new year, so please let me know any time when you'll be able to help out for at least 2 consecutive weeks.

SLR December 17 - Christmas Tree Run

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route is the annual Christmas Tree Run (map here), normally a 10 mile route, which we'll suggest extending to 13 miles (extended map here) for marathon training program participants. If you've run this route with us in the past, note that I've switched it up a little bit this year, to take us past the largest decorated tree in DC at City Center on New York Ave! The 13 mile version adds some out & back distance on East Capitol Street, which is also decked out for the holidays. To shorten this route under than 10 miles, you could go directly down to the Mall at 15th St after passing the White House and pick up the route there, which would be about a 6 mile loop.

I'm going to be out of town again this weekend, but Coach Kathy will kick off the run for you on Saturday morning. We have some possible freezing rain in the forecast, so keep an eye out for a note from Kathy on the club's Facebook/Twitter and/or on the SLR section of the webpage, just in case we need to cancel the run due to weather. I know you're all a hearty bunch, but safety while both running and driving is the top priority. There is also a wreath-laying event at Arlington Cemetery on Saturday morning, so keep that in mind as well, mainly in terms of possible impact on parking availability.

Thank you Steve South for post-run drinks the last two weeks! We will need more volunteers soon, starting at the beginning of the new year, so please let me know any time when you'll be able to help out for at least 2 consecutive weeks.

Mike
